What does the rest of your room look like across from the sliding glass door?

I think the only thing you're missing is color. Be brave and paint that end chair something daring and bright. Orange? Red? Get a big piece of artwork for directly over the table with that color in it. Looks like there might be enough room on the wall next to the slider for thin display shelves. Display some favorite china or some photos and you're done. The light fixture isn't that bad. If budget is a consideration, keep it for now, but swag it so it's over the center of the table or pull the table out so it's centered. You probably won't notice the light fixture when you add the other things. Also an area rug would help define the space and bring in that color again.

The living room. This is the best photo I have right now. And those other walls the couch is on is a whole other post, haha.

I'm thinking maybe remove the dining room light fixture completely? Replace with a pot light? It just looks so in the way and off centred.

Do you keep your table against the end wall most of the time? Or, if you pull your table away from the wall occasionally, you may want to look into a recessed track in the ceiling with multiple pendants. Lightolier offers such a track system. Otherwise, consider a couple of recessed lights on dimmers over the area and use candles for a more intimate dining experience. Both scenarios direct the light downward and help to isolate the dining area from the rest of the living space.

The light definitely needs to be replaced as it's too low for the room. I bet people have to watch out they don't hit it. You might be able to find a ceiling light with a similar globe.

I second the need for a rug under the table, and some pictures or other art work on the walls to add personality to the room.

We only pull the table out when we have guests but it's typically like this.

That fixture was even lower when we moved in! But you right, I think it's still too low. I just don't like it.

I never thought of a rug. I'm interested in that. Any suggestions? What kind, pile, colour?

And, when we do have guests over, that table has 2 extensions to it....it fits about 12 people.

Below is one of our recent projects and as previously mentioned one of the best ways to give an L shaped area a more open space feel is with bright pot lights.

However another more simple solution can be a tall corner white lamp, along with a bar of lights pointed accordingly to light up the area better and perhaps white curtains. This will make the beautiful wood floor stand out.

I agree with comments above, adding colour will make a big difference. You can do this thru painting walls, or adding large pieces of art. I prefer unframed canvases, the bigger the better, with lots of colour. Inexpensive ones can be found at Pier 1, Target, TJMaxx, and will add so much to your rooms.

Rugs are also found at these stores.

Don't try to match items - have fun with texture & colour. Current hanging light looks fine to me. I hate the swag look, so I would recommend placing the table so the light is centred over it. Light is not too low with table under it. Who is going to walk there?

Can also add colour thru toss cushions on sofa.

Color and more Color! I'll work on it. I'm still up in the air on the fixture. When I pull the table out away from the walls I feel it is to tight walking beside it and the (currently ugly) end chair to close to the sliding door. I'll try it out tonight though. Thanks!

I think that color is called for but it's not where I'd start. The furniture looks as though it's slammed into the walls. If you can't change the table, for instance, move it out and turn it askew. Replace the light fixture with something a little more free-form and light looking. A small group of pendants or something that has beading.
Pull the sofa away from the wall a few inches. Use a Cow hide rug and a pair of small drum stools for the coffee table. Artwork above the sofa with a picture light at the top. Keep the artwork atmospheric, like a photo with a foggy image or an abstract in soft colors. New pillows in vivid textures like woven linen, hemp, or leather. Add a grouping on the DR wall and include a few smaller mirrors rather than one large one.

If you are going to keep the table in that location, replace the current light fixture with a more linear one. Add a vase or some candlesticks to the table. Add some shelving, a mirror or a colorful piece of artwork to one of the walls. You could add a rug to ground the space, but is not necessary.

Have you considered a bold/daring wall paper for the dining area, giving it a "room on it's own" feeling. A long rectangular light fitting would be good for the dining area.

Yes, pillows is a must for that couch! Cowhide rug....never thought of that. I think that would look great.
Maybe I should think of some wallpaper. Those light fixtures look beautiful but they also look $$$$. I also plan on replacing the wall sconces on the living room wall. Not sure if the all the light fixtures need to tie in with each other....I assume so.
I'll be looking for some colorful prints and some abstract art this weekend!
