How to replace this kitchen hardware? Please help!

Hi! My husband and I are in the process of house hunting in Chicago. We found a place we really liked, but you guys, I absolutely hate the hardware in the kitchen. I do not like how the handles are SO long and basically span the entire length of a cabinet door. I know replacing hardware in and of itself isn't too hard or costly, but I don't want the length of the replacement hardware to be that long, so we're left with the issue of filling in a hole. Is that even possible, or are we better off getting new cabinet doors to fix the problem of the awful hardware? Thanks in advance! I am a newbie and just trying to educate myself. :)

ORB is oil rubbed bronze. Your cabinets look to be a dark stain, not painted. The ORB will be almost the same color as the wood. You could try matte black as well. This is something you could do with spray paint. It will totally change the look of the kitchen without a lot of cost. Refinishing the stain will be expensive and it is highly unlikely you will get an exact match to what you have now. Your other option is to fill the holes and paint. Before you go that route, I would paint the hardware first. To test it, I would get a few cheap ones and paint them and see if you like it. I know ikea sells this style, but I don't know if they will have your length. This hardware was expensive. Before you do anything, I would live with it awhile and see if it grows on you.

Google "painting cabinet hardware". No holes to fill, and inexpensive.. Nice kitchen

sanjack0, please excuse me if this is an obvious question - but how is painting the hardware going to solve the problem, which is that I hate how long the hardware is in relation to the length of the cabinet? Does that make sense?

You won't be able to change this without filling the holes and refinishing. It looks like a new kitchen, so it would be a shame to have to do that. You could change them to ORB(or paint them). They'll disappear into the wood that way.

Amy Stokes - any idea on the cost estimate for filling the holes and refinishing? Aside from the hardware, it's a stunning kitchen. My husband loves it (and he's the one who cooks!) What do you mean I can change them to "ORB"?

This was an unfortunate trend a few years ago, and it does look strange, doesn't it?
You're going to have to fill at least one hole, so depending on the finish on the cabinets, you're going to be touching up with a bit of exactly-matching paint over the filler, then smoothing and polishing that.
It can be done. If you aren't comfortable doing it, a skilled cabinet person can do it.

sstarr, oh yes I would definitely hire someone to do anything! So, is it possible to fill a hole and have it look seamless, or would you always know that a hole was once there?

It is usually easier to fill in a hole for MDF doors that can easily be painted over in the same colour with a foam paint roller. In your case, it looks like a dark veneer. The existing hardware is also extra long because it extends another 1-1/2 past the screw holes. You can either find hardware that matches the holes but don't extend past it. I attached an example image. Otherwise, I would recommend filling the holes and having them professionally spray painted. I would also recommend speaking to a professional cabinet maker to see if there is a way to fill in the holes in veneer doors.

These pulls are way too long, and painting them won't fix that.

Thank you so far to everyone who has commented! I love Houzz so much!! I honestly never even thought about getting darker colored hardware to blend in with the wood.

Happy that we aren't the only ones with this problem! We are renovating in a few years so we decided not to refinish the cabinets. I will keep checking this feed to see if any other suggestions have been made thank you ! Man people sure loved this hardware in the 00's!
