flagstone flush with the yard

did you dig individual holes for each stone placement or get the yard really wet and press the stone into the mud.

    pd7123, In no case press the stone into the mud.
    To make such a "step by step" walkway, dig out the whole walkway area, make a base as for any other path (geotextile, gravel, sand, all tamped layer by layer). Then install the stones and the distance between them fill with ground with lawn grass seeds or gravel / sand.

      Anytime you want stones flush with the grade allowing you to mow over them, they have to be dug in.

      That would make it 45 ft x 45 ft ish??? It really doesn't look that big. Looks more like 250 sq ft. Was that a typo?

      Not a typo. That patio looks much smaller than it really is.

      So you didn’t put anything between the rocks besides dirt and gravel to make them stay?
