Question about kitchen ventilation

We have a large kitchen and are making the area even larger by converting the most first floor to an open floor plan. We were considering a downdraft ventilation system in front of our induction cooktop in the center island, but are wondering if we need ventilation in a 300 square foot plus room.

If I understand your question, you are considering not having a downdraft at all due to the size of the room. I think that some form of ventilation is needed even if you use it sparingly. The downdraft should work -they aren't great but okay..
