It depends on how many photos you plan to hang and if you're planning to have them professionally framed, which I would highly recommend doing. Why? From your photo, the hall looks to be nice and long, so I wouldn't hang anything smaller than 18x22. Even if you have a smaller photo of Philly, a professional framer can center it, pick the perfect mat to border it and keep the frame size even for all your photos. Compare the pics below to see what format you would most enjoy.

Notice in the bottom photos, the frames are different sizes and styles. Even though all of the frames are black, they obviously are store bought frames made by different companies, so they hang differently and unevenly. Some lay flat, others jut out. Also, the smaller the frames, the more difficult it becomes to make them evenly and perfectly spaced. Last, but not least, photos tend to go tilted and the more of them there are, the more time you'll spend not only trying to make them look straight, but trying to keep them staying straight, which can become tedious.

The larger frames (top photos) that are identically framed and evenly spaced create a more balanced and sophisticated hallway gallery. Also, larger frames tend to stay put and not tilt because they're heavier. Sounds like your home town means a lot to you and is worth the investment of professional framing. Hope this helps!

Christi - thank you so much...very helpful. I agree, my approach is to order the prints a custom size and like the top photos, 4-5 photos in the hall --- custom framing all the way. thanks for posting the visual, that really helped.

Jzeitz -- you're very welcome! I think it's wonderful that you want to use the space to honor your home town. I don't know if you've moved away or still live in Philly and love it, but I can relate to your project on a personal level. There's no place like home!
