I think this sounds marvelous!

One home that had this feature had completely separate full bath rooms, envision 2 entire master baths (each with a connected dressing room) and those connecting to the master bedroom. It stood out b/c the design of each bath was obviously very masculine/feminine and made no apologies for being so drastically different, which I admired. At the time it reminded me of the days when married aristocratics had separate but connecting chambers if that helps picture it

Personally, if I were to have this set up, I'd prefer a common area vs two separate baths, but mostly b/c we are always chatting as we get ready for the day.

Awesome idea!! We have 2 bedrooms now with separate bathrooms. We are both handicapped and want to build a new home on our land. We want to have dual masters with each one to have separate water closet, sink and walk in closet and to share a spa tub and handicap shower and they will connect. My husband is up many nights watching tv or reading to deal with his pain. He sleeps in and I am up early. It doesn't mean you sleep separate all the time, but wow does this arrangement make for a happy marriage. 37 years and counting :)

I found your question by asking a similar one. My cousin has a huge family. I thought it would be a good Idea to have a separate shower and toilet rooms she has 3 boys one who is disabled and 2 girls. It's hard to get in the restroom when I am visiting!

I'm a little late, but my grandparents told me separate bathrooms save marriages. They were high school sweethearts and head-over-heels until they went to heaven. We built separate master baths in our house, so I think 2 toilets makes perfect sense. You may want to be together for everything as newly weds, but a little privacy is a great thing!

I think if you have room, can afford it, and BOTH AGREE it could be brilliant. I like the idea of having the two toilets enclosed on opposite ends of the bath with the vanity in between. A bit over-the-moon would be to have completely separate his and her bathrooms (maybe his with a shower, hers with a tub.)

The secret to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms. What we did in one house was have a bathroom with two entrances a his and hers side. My side had a sink, toilet, bathtub and walk in closet. His had a shower instead of a bath. the bath and shower met end to end so we could use either as needed. We did not use commode closets as we had done that before when he broke an ankle and I could not help him get into or out of the room. 6'4" and at the time 311 lbs (21 stone) I am only 5'3" 130 lbs. The space was the width of the house at that end 30 X 24. I wish I had pictures for you....Hurricane Andrew.....

I have spent many hours searching for plans which include his and her separate toilets. For medical reasons I spend more time in the bathroom than is practical when you share the room. Having this luxury would make life a bit easier. Currently, I am using the powder room downstairs and leaving the master bath for my husband with the exception of bathing. My ideal would be to have the equivalent of 2 powder rooms and a shared tub and shower.

This idea is great I'm working on the same thing, I don't think people realise how practical this is, my husband likes to dream in the toilet so first thing on mornings when we get up if he gets in first I have to wait to pee or run down the hall to my daughter's bathroom, what is the point of a master bathroom if you are always using another bathroom. I also want two separate showers since I am faster but again he takes forever and I can't always get in before him.

We have two bathrooms in our master bedroom! No, I don't live in a mansion...actually a 2500 sq ft cape cod. We thought it was odd when we purchased it but after 12 years I love. It. We are getting ready to update them and have thought about combining them (they share a wall) but honestly...I like my own bathroom. My husband's bathroom is on the small side but he could care less! Sooooo...we may just leave them separate and update two bathrooms!

Two ensuites. I repeat myself. I am not crazy about a toilet in a little box with a door either. I would rather take the powder room and he the bathroom than two w/c.

I hate the idea. I don't see how that is necessary. Do something else cool with the extra space!

If you have the space and budget, why not? I would incorporate a sink in each toilet room and effectively create separate bathrooms, united by the common shower and tub area/ This eliminates the need for double sinks in the open area and provides opportunity to create a very special space. Generally, this sort of design is a (very) high end feature.

I am solid in my decision to make this happen for us. I am so thrilled to have other's participate and share floor plans! If we stay in this house I am tempted to put a large shower where our huge soaking tub is now...(at 5'1" I can't even get my leg up and over the tile to get in there, forget about getting out of it) and putting an enclosed toilet where the shower is now. So far I found two builders that offer homes with the two enclosed toilets in the master. As mentioned in previous posts, make sure the door is wide enough for a walker, transfer chair, etc. If you age in place this will come in handy. The builders are Toll Brothers and K. Hovnanian. It appears that these builders only offer this on new homes that sit on a few acres where they can more easily expand the house layout.

Re-reading the earliest posts on this and found it hilarious that some people didn't understand the majority and our vision. Who on earth would think that any of us were talking about having two toilets side by side? Or two opened toilets facing each other. One person wrote this is not good unless you find yourself having to go to the bathroom at the same time....that is exactly the reason for the two separate toilets, because as life happens, I am 99 percent sure that there will be a time(s) when you need to go to the bathroom at the same time.

There was a bizarre competition show me n cable a few years back, people would show off their over-the-top homes, and the other competitors would vote on the best. One home had a huge master bathroom. A glassed in shower centered on a back wall. And a toilet on each side of the shower. Not walled in. People sat on the toilets and waved at each other. I never forgot that. Hopefully you were able to get the bath you wanted, update, and photos please! It's a great idea!

So , what did you end up doing? Did you get the two toilets? Is your hubby still talking to you if you did, or is he hiding in there all the time now?

We want to do it also. We saw it on The Parade of Homes and Thought WOW GENIUS! Each toilet was on the opposite end of the VERY large master bathroom and had its own room with a door for privacy. We loved the idea...I mean who wants to see that happening anyway...a private room for that seems like a very smart plan!!!

Two, two, two baths in one! I think what is really happening is two bathrooms surrounded by common walls. Instead of "jack and jill baths" it's "His and Hers" bathrooms in a master suite. Properly designed his and her bathrooms makes great sense. If it's in the budget why not? No, it's not crazy, it's just "opulent".

Do what you want but know that the money you are going to spend putting in a second toilet will never be reciprocated during resale. A buyer is not going to pay you more. and may even offer less for the odd feature to be removed. If you are ok with that, then go for it.

I think they probably made up their mind some time in the last two years...

I have has two toilets in the last two homes we have owned. The only way to go. They were separated with the tub between and a short wall by each. We love this arrangement.

I just heard the most amazing (whew) story. Husband and wife made their colonoscopy appointments on the same day because their daughter (who lived some distance away) could drive them to the appointments, wait and bring them home. I didn’t ask, but hope, they had two bathrooms.

In Vegas my hotel room had a toilet/bidet combo in one room and the second had only a urinal. I thought that was pretty clever.

I did the new master suite with 2 bathrooms and a shared shower. The shower is in the middle, the door on one side goes into his toilet-vanity and the door to the right goes to her toilet-vanity. Closed off, private, lovely.

enclosed or not I love the idea. when you have a spouse with IBS and you don't have to share the same toilet it's great. it's not about going at the same time, it's about each having their own throne when they do need to go at separate times. tired of cleaning every time I need to go.

We are doing this in the home we are currently designing. I think it is a wonderful plan and in some situations (such as ours) a vital feature of the home plan/design. And my husband wholeheartedly agrees!

I know exactly how long they would be "his" and "hers"; until his was dirty. Then they would be his and ours.

Yes! We are doing a master suite addition soon and I want two toilets in separate enclosed spaces. I do not want to hear, see or smell my husband's business.

It seems to me that two toilets would be practical if you have kids but I doubt two grownups would go at the same time. And what about guests? Keep them separate, or if you decide to go through with this idea, have them enclosed.

Robin - Not sure if husband's business will be eradicated. I'm sure you've been in a public bathroom where even if someone is 10 stalls away from you - noises and smells are still there.

Your desires to not see, hear, or smell your husband's business can be solved for $40 and some minor lifestyle adjustments.

Are his smells really so bad that a good fan can't handle them? Put your money in an exhaust fan on a timer, tell him to punch the button for 30 min when he goes in, and that should take care of any residual stink. Seeing it should never be a problem if he practices the basic hygiene of flushing (and if he doesn't, that toilet is going to stink up the whole area even if it is in a seperate room). As for hearing it: don't be in the bathroom while he's on the toilet.

I would never clean the "his" water closet. His closet, his problem and stay out of mine.

Wow - If he did not clean it, then I'd have to because it would become "our" problem.

That's just crazy! Take it from me. I have double sinks in a nook in the hallway. To the right there is a full bathroom (shower, toilet and sink). To the left is a water closet! All I do is clean toilets. When the second owner lived here he did a real job on that area of the house!

Next house we WILL have a master bath with two enclosed toilets: I'm short and need the lower height toilet and use the hall bathroom while hubby is a foot taller and needs the higher height. Plus, he would like a large soaking tub. This is the design I've been working on that enclosed the tub and shower together from a hotel we visited. The glass shower door keeps the occupants in the tub warm!

Sandra, there is no right and wrong, different people have different needs. The only thing you have to look at is if it may affect resale value. In case you eventually sell it, you can always turn the second toilet into a Bidet.
