Centered on the Fireplace or Not?

I have a tri-level house with an airy living room. I have some mid century furniture that I want to arrange. The question is it necessary to line everything up with the fireplace? I have two choices for you to look at--centered or straight. This room is in transition. I am looking for a colorful, but not too colorful, 8 x 10 rug in nature's colors. I also would like to add color with pillows, and objects of art. The fireplace will eventually be a stone facade. What do you think of a iconic arc lamp over the sofa?

I prefer the first grouping - makes quite a statement. Would move the flower pot close to column to give walking space. I would go will some orange as accent color to go with the nice woods. Your room needs very little. It's already gorgeous.

Hi, everyone! I thought I'd weigh in on the area rug quandary. I noticed that the dining room has a really yummy coral-terracotta accent wall. To my eye, it compliments the earthy tones of the furnishings very nicely. Considering the accent wall, I'm inclined to think that turquoise might not be the best choice for the predominant color of the area rug.

The kilim that Darzy presented has just a touch of turquoise/teal that could be emphasized with accessories and art. As a whole, the warm colors compliment the furnishings nicely - and indirectly reference the accent wall

The out-of-reach (for now) New Wave area rug that you posted, Chezron, would also work beautifully. It has a touch of blue that could be interpreted through turquoise accents elsewhere. It's also quite artistic.

With either of these (or something like them) you would have a spring board for the turquoise you like.

Manon...that looks great. A hint of blue/turquoise in the rug will work beautifully. I'm loving the kilim rug now since I see it in your collage with the furnishings and those pillows are super!

Hey guys, I do have one concern about the linear rugs (mine included). If the furniture is on the diagonal, will the 90 angle with the wood be a distraction.? I think I would like it better if it ran in line with the wood or at a 180 IF we are talking linear. Random design won't create a visual disruption. Thoughts?

Chezron, What are your paint colors in the D.R (mfgr and color names)?
Good thinking karen. You are so right. The linear rug will be a distraction to the beautiful wood floor. It will feel askew. Darn.

Love middle pic with angled to firepl. Your room is very nice. I would use some color in area Rug. You have enough neutral color going. Something very bold art in firepl insert. Palm could use some help. I use silk. Always look good.

Loved the rug Karen Paul. I just wish there was some green or blue in it. Awesome though! You guys are all so helpful and I appreciate it!

Loved the rugs LB Interiors, especially the first one! I don't know what my paint colors are. They are likely changing anyway. The red is not zen enough for me. I am getting divorced and I am shaking things up. Got rid of all the old furniture and am furnishing in my taste and style with mostly Craigslist finds. Couldn't stand the old stuff with all of the associated memories.

Chezron: Just out of curiosity, what did you love most about LB's 1st rug photo. Personally (and obviously), I need much more information. As for your divorce, I am truly sorry but I've been through three and am now a widow. I met my MAN when he was in his 70's and in our 10 short years together he made up for all my past mistakes. So, let's build you a new life with THINGS, and then you can move to a new frontier!

Ah! It's coming together for me now. New beginnings are exciting! And green is such an appropriate color for it. I think of it as a great harmonizer.

Karen, you've got sharp eye. Your observation about the linear rug on the diagonal with the the direction of wood floor was keen. Sometimes we're not aware of why something doesn't quite sit right with us. Isn't it funny how the details, though seemingly small, can make such an impact? Never ceases to amaze me. In our case, with all other things being harmonious, that small inconsistent detail may create just the slightest amount of tension that makes for a dynamic design - subliminal as it may be.

Perhaps I misunderstand. In my minds eye, I pictured the long edge of the area rug running parallel to the diagonally placed furniture. Oh, boy - now I'm all twisted around and upside down! It must be getting close to my bedtime.

You gals are the best. I enjoy you so much!

Manon, you are so correct about everything subliminal. The eye would keep checking the disparity and often times the "discomfort" felt doesn't bubble up to a conscious level. The devil IS in the details. Drives me nutz! I tend to check and double check things because I'm dyslexic. Did I tell you the one about a living room I drew up and had inadvertently flipped the template for the baby grand piano? Yeah, well that sort of thing only happens once, most especially when the client praises the plan and says, "...however, there seems to be a small problem...". Ha, ha!

I did say I was furnishing with Craigslist--right? I found a 6 x 8 rug for $50 that will do for now. Grand total for room, except for the plants and pillows, is $1,950. The sectional is a mid century modern design by Lou Hodges, who was a local mid century modern (mcm) designer. As per your suggestions, I moved a few pieces, but kept the line up with the fireplace. Since the photo, I have had the sectional and the rug steam cleaned. Please excuse my temporary oil paintings as I am just now learning how to paint and have nothing else to put up there yet. Now I need some art objects...

Oh, Chezron - you have quite the eye! No wonder you've taken up painting. I'd say that rug is a fabulous find.

I'm reluctant to say it, but I don't think the Beidermeier is optimally placed. Two reasons; it appears to block access to the sliding doors - limiting light - and it looks to have been relegated to place of secondary importance. I preferred it in its former place of prominence. I do believe it should serve as a feature furnishing. It's previous position did that. Okay, I had to say it, but we can forget that I did - especially if you are pleased.

As a creative type who likes plants, I thought you might appreciate this DIY project. It kind of fits into your search for objet d'art.

Well, Karen. that's why I asked for a photo of the entire room to see the fireplace wall too. I still think the balance is good. The photo that was last posted does not give a clear representation of the room as a whole. I think I need to see the photo angle of capturing more of the entire room.

Guess what Karen? There is a pic of the room with the secretary moved by the windows and the fireplace. Ooops. First one of the last two that chezron posted. The tree is in the way. I think it does balance the room where it is now. What do you think?
  • PRO
In looking at the photos with the horizontal positioning, I would like to have a triangle drawn. First is the fireplace. Second is the secretary where it was originally, which becomes the point of the triangle. Third, I'd like to switch out the ficus with the palm. So the height of the ficus tree becomes the third line of the triangle.
Final Arrangement (For Now) I decided I usually view the room coming down the stairs, so I would rather see the secretary than the bird condo.

I like it! My thoughts were similar to yours - what would my eye be drawn to upon entering the room from the front door? The secretary seems much more engaging - not to offend Mr. Merrifeather's home!

But now Karen's got me thinking about triangles (magical shape) . . . I wonder how that ficas would fair next to the console. Or did we already talk about that?
  • PRO
No, ficus needs to be pulled down to the very end of the sofa opposite the secretary. So you have the three heights fireplace (point 1), secretary (point 2) and ficus (point 3)

I like it that way too. Another thought .... would you like the ficus where the bird etagere is now. I think the ficus obstructs the open view of the room. I would place the etagere on the staircase wall on the left of the TV console. It's a smaller wall.

The shorter plant near the post.

Sorry Manon, yes on that end of the room somewhere in that area, most likely as an end anchor to the sofa (near the console). Didn't know where in the room it was. Ha, ha!

The post/end of sofa area is where I am, however, I don't see a photo of the entrance to the room. So perhaps the ficus would be blocking entrance?
    last modified: 12 years ago
I think I understand. The entrance is highlighted with a circle. I think you're talking about placing the ficas to the left of the console (where the palm currently is). Is this the triangle you're talking about?
