Could you manage altering or even just removing the back splash? I would recommend a new quartz counter top, but if you can't change the back splash most things you choose will clash--though you might be able to get away with a dark black toned quartz/granite. Honestly, though, I'd consider waiting until you can alter/remove the back splash too. Then you can choose whatever counter top you like, paint the cabinets, change out your hardware, and enjoy an entirely new kitchen!

I like both ideas. I can't change the back splash right now. That would mean my whole kitchen. But I like the idea of the rug, hardware and dark counter top.

It is just amazing what painting cupboards and adding new hardware can do. Absolute transformation if done right. What style/look are you going for?

Should I go with white cabinets?

A new modern blind might add a pop, some funky new appliances/cannisters, and a large phot or canvas on the wall above your table. New cushions to tie it in might help. Whats the lighting like>

Paint cabinets white or cream, something that will go with your tile. I'd swap out the table and chairs for a vintage Formica top table with matching chairs since you like retro look. New rug, vintage/reproduction hardware, new window treatment, vintage posters on the wall (instead of the iron piece) should make a world of difference.
