This is our dining room and we need ideas to go with light walls and dark wood floors.

I would put a huge (5x5 or 4x6) piece of art or mirror on that wall.

Check out the artwork on our page as well - you definitely need a focal point on that wall.

What effect do you want to achieve, traditional, modern (like the lighting fixtures), eclectic? Will the room be used daily, and how many need to be seated; or will it be a formal dining room?

Not knowing your style or budget, the room looks on the square side. I would opt for a round table in the middle with a pedestal base so table legs don't obstruct seating. I'm seeing a heavy turned base, top and base painted entirely red. Matched or mismatched wood chairs in primary yellow with cream or white seat pads.

Service pieces are always great for dining areas. Depending on how space is taken up by the table, consider a vintage vanity with mirror, serving cart or one of those odd 3-tiered round side tables so often seen in second hand shops, for the short wall leading to the doorway (in the upper RH of the picture),. Choose another vibrant color to paint it out: turquoise!

If you find an amazing square or rectangular table, consider pushing it up against a wall and swagging the lamp over to it. Don't let the lighting fixture dictate where your furniture goes. Also consider removing the ceiling lights and bringing in floor lamps with shades for the corners.

If we knew your furniture style in the rest of the home, we'd have a place to start. First thing is that you need a new chandelier, but it must complement the furniture. A round table will be more convivial and will soften the squarish-ness of the room and windows. Comment here and add pix of other furnishings to give us a style reference. Start an ideabook for this room to help us out. Seeing what you like in inspiration pix will gel your preferences for us.

What is the thing hanging from the ceiling near the chandelier?

You might start with replacing the chandelier depending on your style. Hard to tell but it looks like it'll need to be lowered to hang about 34" from the top of the table.

Art is almost always better than a mirror to add warmth and interest.

Add a live palm in the corner near the window.

Do you have any other furniture? A buffet?

It depends on your style and the furniture ,I like it the way it is but I would also change the colour on the walls, and the chandelier , in all ...I would like to see a picture of the furniture , I love that Peacock painting that Leelee chose for you .

Round or square table is always best if you can. I would include your floor color in the theme; use it in drapery color; possibly banding and in some art.

Either choose a dining table & chairs in a light finish, or put a light-hued rug underneath.

First I would remove the glass shades on your chandelier. I did this with mine, and it looks much more refined. Then find a colorful area rug and window treatments that coordinate. The room looks small, so a round table may be best.

I do like the rectangular pedestal dining table idea presented by leelee. Why? Because more and more, people are using their formal dining rooms for other purposes, such as a library/reading space/ watching the kids do their homework from the kitchen.
For a buffet, I'd do the traditional drawers on top ( for cutlery, etc.), but have open shelving underneath for books and the like. Think of how many times you're going to use this formal space and is it worth the investment to have it just used a few time a year. Go for a "multi-functional" approach and it will be worth every penney. You'll be glad you did.

I think if you choose rectangular dinning table presented by Leelee, then you can choose a beautiful rectangular chandelier which is made of as many Pendant that you wish and any design you like custom made for you, please check our website, bahirlighting.com

Wonder what is with the two lights on ceiling? What style are the adjoining rooms? Are you going casual or formal? Is it small or large, and do you have pics of what the door and other side go to? My first impression was "That wall is just waiting for a banquette to happen, but only if you go casual. If formal, then seems more like wooden table and high backed, maybe slipcovered or upholstered chairs. Guess I am saying it needs some fabrics! Very pretty!

This ornamental cast iron table base would look amazing with your dark hard wood floors and would be a nice contrast with the wall color.
