Spruce up exterior?

Any thoughts on how to spruce up the exterior of this classic Georgian colonial? Dormers? Update portico? Landscaping? Other ideas? Thanks!

    Beautiful home, change nothing!

I might paint the downspouts so they blend in with red brick.

    Classy home.

Considered dormers to offset the low pitched roof. Also nsidered updating the portico to something not rounded and where the pillars don't obstruct the view of the doorway. Would these changes hurt the appearance? Thanks!

Before doing anything, I suggest a great book for classic exterior architecture called "Get Your House Right".

Highly recommended for your type of house.

What a beautiful, beautiful home! I think the rounded portico goes so well with the other rounded pieces (arched windows, round window above), I would not change it. Those porticos are more expensive to do than standard straight line versions, and add to the perceived value. I wouldn't do dormers either. The visual rhythm of the house is wonderful. You might look at doing a decorative chimney cap to add to the overall classic look. If looking for a slight color change, you might do the shutters in dark navy blue, with a navy blue door (keeping the white storm door). Instead of an address plaque, find some classic numbers in a traditional font/metal you love, and mount them above the three-panel transom window. Maybe a new door knocker if you like. I would relocate the ADT sign over to the left at the base of the tree. Bad guys will still spot it, but it won't be right at the entry. I'd put a couple of beautiful tallish (24" high at least) white pots between the pillars on each side. Do a small boxwood plant in the center for year-round green, and fill the rest with seasonal flowers.

I would paint the shutters black and the door black too. I would also hang a cool carriage style lantern porch light from the portico in an oil rubbed bronze or black finish

I concur with my fellow Houzzers. This home is absolutely charming! Traditional design at its best, unaltered, and clearly not remuddled. The facade is almost modern in the simplicity of execution, beautiful!! If I were to nit-pick, might I suggest updating the light fixtures on the garage to fixtures that descend down. The present lamps seem a little high to the viewer. Consider hand forged carriage or coach fixtures from Bevolo. The only other few things that might appeal to you, would be a small cupola on the garage, and perhaps replacing the single garage door with period carriage doors at some point. You might give some thought to a cobblestone or brick drive and front walkway as the budget would permit. Other than these small suggestions, your home is visually stunning!!!

I agree w/the downspouts either being painted to match the brick or, preferably move them to the side since the spoutings are along all sides. The entryway is perfect! I thought that porticos were roofed structures alongside a door of a structure to enable people to enter the structure protected from the elements.

Your home is its own showpiece. You do not say what planting zone you are in so it is hard to be accurate. I see snow but that doesn't disclose how low the temperatures actually get.

So, research your area's native plantings, drive around your area taking pictures of classic plantings that appeal to you, research how big they will get to be, sketch out your house and your fully grown plantings on grid paper and see if you like what the final product will look like 20 years from now. And Good luck!!
