ideas for creating courtyard

I would like to make the area right in front of the white fence into a courtyard by changing the surface and adding decorative fencing - not sure if would do wood decking or stones.

You have a wonderful space to work in. Not sure what zone you are in. It would be nice to change the railings out to wrought iron which would go nicely with your home. Put in something like a thread leaf maple towards the back corner, use some type of water feature and some lighting. Fill in with plants that stay fairly low and provide pops of color that work in your zone. I would use stone for the courtyard and not decking. It would look better with the style of your home.

Thank you! I just bought this place in Sept. I am in Florida (Tampa). I got a quote for fencing - aluminum, but looks like Wrought Iron. I was thinking of a gate in the walkway under the arch leading to the door, too. I appreciate your feedback.

I think the railing is an impediment in your courtyard plans. Remove it and don't replace it with anything. You will be able to enter your courtyard through that arch also. Use pavers to mimic a natural stone surface. :)

So, you're saying no fencing at all? I am removing what is there and was planning to surround the outer edge with a wrought iron type of fence just inside the walk walk way.

I wouldn't put up any fencing unless it was necessary to the style of the home. I guess I was also thinking I wouldn't want to seperate the house from the courtyard with a fence - on any side. But I can see how adding wrought iron would make it a more private setting too. :)
