Between the stones?

I live in the NW also and my nightmare upkeep job is keeping the plentiful weeds and crabgrass out from between the stones on our permeable courtyard (we'd planted thyme). I was curious if you laid down a weed barrier at all before you laid the stones and what you put between the stones?

There was a weed barrier laid down under a compacted gravel base and the stone was set in the gravel. We used polymeric sand for the joints to prevent weed growth were we didn't want the creeping red thyme to be. The polymeric sand forms a grout like fill between the stones and helps with weeds. Thanks for asking.
