change black counter?

Designer does not like our honed black granite top or color of our 20-year-old vanity. We are updating the bathroom a bit by removing the tub and adding a low-curb shower. We had not planned to change the counter top but might consider painting vanity. People say this maple is outdated. Would love your thoughts?

I like your countertop as well. I would change the flooring as well and remove the wallpaper. The cabinet, I think, looks a little dated but maybe sanding it and giving it a richer color and changing the hardware can bring it up to date. I don't normally advise painting wood but this is one cabinet in the bathroom. I could go for a paint job on this.

Keep the beautiful countertop, paint the vanity and walls a slightly different color. And fire your designer

I really like the vanity and countertop as is. To be blunt, I would replace the tile floor with something darker (maybe slate) and then paint the walls to tie it all together. Honestly your designer should be listening to your likes and finding solutions to make it all work not telling you to get rid of components because of his/her biases.

I wouldn't paint the cabinet, but think a gel stain could bring out more warmth from the wood to go with your top. I took the liberty of darkening your baseboard, as well.

I think you could go even darker with the stain, if you liked, but this shade draws on the wallpaper. I hope that, as long as the tub is coming out, that a new floor is going in that will mesh with your existing treatments. Some new hardware could be lovely, as well. May your designer fair better in the next round.

If the counter is granite, keep it! Paint, not stain the base cabinet. I would stick with a warm grey color palette and you have the working of a modern bathroom. Add some linear pulls on the cabinets and you are done.
