Split Cedar Ceiling Tile

My house was built in 1950. The living room and master bedroom ceilings are split cedar tiles. About 8 of the tiles in the living room have water damage. I haven't been able to find replacement tiles. Other suggestions (manufacturing duplicate tiles from pine, moving tiles from bedroom, covering the tile with sheetrock) are not appealing. I've contacted a company that makes split cedar siding to see if they can help but they said they could not duplicate the 16" x 16" tiles.

Any suggestions?

I think one problem would be to get one whole tile off of the ceiling in one piece. They are glued on pretty tight.

HI -- They stopped making those tiles in the early sixties I think . My childhood 1953 home had them . Most people have since removed them by now and replaced with drywall or other ceiling tiles . You may have to admit that they are done ,their time has past . Just plan on redoing the ceiling so it will be up to date. Fussing to try to make something to patch is just going to end up looking like a strange patch job. I don't think they look very nice anyway.

Found a woodworker who could replicate the tiles. I'll post pictures of the repaired ceiling. I think it is unique enough to save. Much better than plasterboard!

Can you provide me the name of woodworker who replicated the tiles? I have the same tiles in my den and kitchen. Have 3-4 tiles that need replaced.

Steve Stoutamire, (850) 933-0224 Tallahassee Florida. If your tile is exactly like mine he can probably use the same die he used for mine. If not you may need to send him a piece of tile - whatever width you want to repeat. The wider the repeat the more expensive since he will have to make a wider die. It cost me $440 for ten. If your tile is just like mine, it may be cheaper for you since Steve won't have to make a die. Tell him Debbie M referred you. Picture of finished ceiling attached.

Anybody else in the NE remember these being used mostly on garage exteriors? HD used to sell them but if memory serves me right they were not cedar although I believe you if you say yours were.

Unique use of the product but I am fairly sure they were not intended for interior use.
