The question is what are you willing to do? You can remove some of the cabinet doors, or remove some of the upper cabinets, or reconfigure the entire room. You can also turn the photos, please, and get a shot from farther back.

Remove the cabinets hanging from the ceiling over the peninsula. If you declutter what's behind those doors I bet you will surprise yourself by how much superfluous stuff you have.

I think painting is a good idea, to make the cupboards look more crisp, but would stay away from two tone effects in favour of a cool white shade, and would trade out the hardware for silver metal. When it comes time for new appliances, look for stainless or white, only.

Maranda, if you match the wall colour as closely as possible to the backsplash, that will help some, too.
I can see that removing that one row of cabinets causes a domino effect, and am assuming from lack of response that you need that storage, so will instead suggest rearranging things so that your glassware, or more decorative pieces go over the peninsula, and the shelving be made open on both sides, and given puck lights.

Paint or change hinges to match cabinets, the way they are now they draw the eye instead of flowing. As stated before change the door handles and draw pulls to something that does not jump out at you.
Going frame and doors different colors will also chop up the space.
Make sure you are using all you storage space, especially the corners. You can buy in cabinet hardware now which can give you easier access to those areas. The cabinets over the peninsula really closes the kitchen in, making it feel very small. If you could remove them or have cabinets that don't come down so low, would help. How do you talk to someone in the other room, are you always bending down to see and talk to them?
The area above the cabinets, is that a blocked in space or is it air ducts? Opening that area may help. Also you could do under cabinet LED lights to brighten the space.

A light neutral color scheme for the cabinets is a must to open this space up. Replace oven to match or blend in (ie stainless). The black oven is bisecting the entire kitchen. The fridge is less important now, and could be replaced at a later date. Reserve use of a strong color (or soft for that matter) to strategic accents i.e. flowers or art...

Agreeing with mjjk, I would take down the cabinets above the island. You could then put recessed lights to open up the space even more. Although appropriate pendants would be a classy touch.
