Hi Lynne. Thanks for the question. In this situation there was a vertical wall above the door and window. The arbor was attached below the roof overhang. If you have a different situation please let me know.

Did you (when looking at the picture) attach the rafters to the roof on the left side? Can it rest on the roof or do you need to attach the rafters? As for the wall above the door and window, is there a piece of wood that you added or did you just attach to the existing siding? Thanks, Jackie

Hi Jackie. Thanks for the questions. The rafters on the left side are not attached to the roof. It is good to leave some space between the rafters and the roof to allow airflow so wood can stay dry and to also allow for any settlement due to changes in the weather. As to the wall above the doors..yes there are vertical pieces of wood that were bolted to the existing wall to support the beams that extend to the two front post. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi, How would you design this if there were not a wall above the front door. We are looking at this application for a similar house but a slanted metal roof. For it to look right would it need to tie into the existing roofline? We'd rather not tear into that. Any ideas?
