The tile is hand made terra cotta so it is very uneven. I thought perhaps wood would be able to be shaved or fitted somehow. I'll try your solution and see. Thanks!

Great! Your photos have given me confidence. Now I just have to figure out how to match the shiny glaze...

Ask your tiler to grind the high spot off the tile behind the plate so you can place the plate flat against the wall. The tiles appear to have irregular surfaces. If they are hand made they will also be softer so sanding or grinding down the high spot is feasible.

You can buy a vinyl plate that has a little flex to it. This will hide most of your problem.

When the electrical boxes were installed, they were meant to be flush with sheetrock. Someone added more dimension with the tile.

My husband has tiled kitchen backsplashes twice. Both times, he "moved out" the electrical box a little by adding an electric box extension-thing, so the switch plate covers would fit flush.

Go to the electrical department at your hardware store and talk to someone about options.

Looking at your photos again, I may have the problem completely wrong… Maybe, someone added TOO MUCH of an extension or the electrical boxes were placed out "too far." Is there anything you can see to modify when you take off the switch plates? Can you take off a switch plate and take a photo? I'll ask my husband to look at it… see what he would do (if it was in our house)….

A lot of the electrical switch boxes used in construction today have an adjustable depth. Simply turn a screw to adjust to insure that it is flush.
