Curb appeal? Help!
Comments (15)As for the house numbers and their size, you should check with your local building/housing codes to see what the regulation is in your community. Personally, I would add wall-mounted lights that flank the door, take down the hanging light on the center door trim, and then center large, black numbers on this door trim or lintel, if you will. Red doors are a bit overdone, and I wonder if you would consider a refreshing color like lime green or yellow for the door? A soft beige would look nice, provided you would have beige on the fascia of the roof overhang and on the porch ceiling and porch floor. I would suggest painting the backs or risers of steps white to make the details of the steps stand out....See MoreCurb Appeal Help
Comments (18)decoenthusiaste, thanks for jump on this so fast. Yes the stump will be coming out but it was such a massive tree we have treated the stump and will not be removing it until next spring. The roots are massive and I can't even dig 1 foot into the garden. My husband will kill me if I replace this lamp again. (then again I can take them to the cottage) OK what do you suggest for lights. I am begging him to put another light on the left. It's so wierd that every house on our street only has one light. Yes the closet in on the left inside. No, it's time to coat the driveway anyway after powerwashing so it will be done. I will check what liriope is. I was thinking about bringing a walkway down to about 1/2 way down the driveway from the front door, or extending the gardens and putting a small 3 high retaining wall around the garden. I like the sandalwood with the brick, the brink has alot of taupe and a pinky hue to it. Decoration du Monde, yes I agree a walkway would make it more interesting. Im not good at pruning anything, the tree on the left was suppose to be all pruned into balls, now look at it. I have already tried a red/wine colour door and right now the door is Polo Blue (BM which is suppose to be almost black, we didn't like either of them. So far the black has looked the best. There is a burgandy in the brick not a real red. Also I have 2 -3' planters that I thought I would put beside the door, the planters at in a v shape where they are larger up to and go smaller at the bottom. They are grey right now but they can be painted. I haven't used them since I didn't know what colour to paint them. I will post a pic of them beside the door....See MoreCurb Appeal or should I say LACK OF Curb Appeal, HELP!!
Comments (31)Lose the overhang stoop roof above the door and extend the gable roof to create a front porch with all new matching posts. You'll need a need to move the downspout for the gutter as well. Put a bench or porch swing under the two windows left of the front door -- perhaps after you change out those two windows for a bay window. Where the grass meets what appears to be pavement, create a short brick or stone or poured concrete wall directly in front of and so you can level that part of the yard in front of that newly extended front porch, with a square pillar for a potted plant on each end of the wall; the rest of the wall would then decrease in height from there to the driveway along with the slope of the yard. Also put a wall between the house and sidewalk with the height decreasing as does the existing slope. Because the roof of the house appears light grey, you could choose a black trim with any color for the house, including either white or any shade of grey. I've seen houses with grey roofs with both house and trim painted a darker grey but with dark red wine colored shutters and door that looked really good. You might prefer two shades of blue with cobalt blue door or two shades of some other color -- house lighter; trim darker. When the budget permits, you might replace the door for another one with at least a small window to see who might be knocking. If you choose grey for the house and black for the trim, you could choose black for the door (with brass kick plate). After you repaint the house and trim, put a hedge in front of the existing brick wall under the front windows. I note that your post was in January of 2014 -- what have you decided/done?...See MoreHelp! Need curb appeal help for plain brick ranch
Comments (10)Shutters, cupola and weather vane would update the look without major structural changes. If you're considering changing out the front door rather than just painting it, consider installing a side light beside the front door. Since the tree must go anyway [sad ... :-( ...] [- save wood for smoker grill?], and if the budget permits, consider enlarging the front porch considerably and make a point of spacing the front porch columns so that they are in front of the window frame rather than the window.. Either make the left gable wider to include the existing porch; or Consider changing the roofline on the right side of the house from the middle ridge to the front of the house to create a second, larger gable on the right and extend it forward six or eight feet from the front of the house and then extend the roof over the existing porch in between so the front porch extends around and in front of the right side of the house all the way to the right edge of the house. With porch furniture in front of the right side of the house, that large blank space under the windows will not seem so blank. From your new front porch across from the door, create a candy-can shaped sidewalk toward the driveway that leaves several feet between the house and sidewalk as a planting area. Repurpose the mismatched shrubs to the back yard....See MoreAnn
