Great question. The room appeared to be very sterile with all of the white doors , trim , mantle and bookcases. As a designer I love contrast and texture so I use layers. Black Fox which is the paint color on the mantle and the doors is actually a gray black so not as strong as a true black. The walls are covered in a linen which gives texture and then you have the contrast of neutral fabrics as well as the rug which balance. You also have to consider the architecture and the view through the doors .The white doors would not allow your eye to continue on to the exterior it would stop at the white.
Now you have a seamless view from the front of the house through the den all the way through to the beautiful back porch and pool area. This home is located in Florida so the outdoor living space is just as important as the interior space. I hope this helps to answer your question and thank you so much for your inquiry.
