Shou Sugi Ban - cedar or cypress? Source?

We are contemplating cladding our house in Venice, CA with shou sugi ban. Builders here are not familiar with the material - they don't know where best to source and durability in So Cal sun an unknown. Apparently might require yearly oiling. Any input would be appreciated.

It is Cedar, We burned it ourselves, This picture shows some of the areas that need reburned from installation. We burned it on the ground and then installed as we didn't want to set the house on fire.

@agalker - there are different techniques for the burning as well. i found that some of the more traditional methods of burning, they allowed to burn longer than we did. i would imagine that would even be a stronger repellant of water, weather, bugs, etc.
