If this were my kitchen, I would do closed cabinets w/ a stainless steel, brick patterned back splash.

If you're storing items on top of your fridge that aren't decorative, it tells me that your kitchen doesn't have enough storage for your needs.

I can tell you what i personally like but that's just my opinion. Stainless steel brick patterned back splash would not be my choice - too cold, and this kitchen already seems rather cold to me.

Closed cabinets seem like the most appropriate move and you could extend them around the corner too with an feature corner cabinet

I'm a fan of both open shelving and cabinets with glass door fronts. You can never have too much storage! Some of my favorite kitchens!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'm definitely leaning towards open shelving or glass cabinets. Our kitchen only has a skylight and no window so I don't want to make the space darker or heavier.
