Change the cabinets.. give it a modern look if u prefer so.

Just to the right of the fridge is the hallway to the bathroom and bedrooms. Would it work if I painted the cabinets and changed the hardware? Thank you both. Once the project is complete, I will add the finished product!

Painting the cabinets is always a temporary fix, plus it's time consuming. If budget is your concern, there are plenty of cabinet companies that can help you with that. Avoid custom if this is the case. I live in Canada, and have done a lot of designs using in-stock cabinets from local hardware stores. They can be restricted in sizes, but a good designer can make it work.

Easier than painting, deepen the wood color with something like Polyshades finish and stain in one. In one or two coats you can have cherry,walnut or mahogany stained cabinets. Painting would take multiple coats of primer and paint with sanding in between them. If you have the budget for it, new stone or quartzite counters would be nice.
Before doing anything live with it for awhile. It will give you a better idea of what works and doesn't in order to plan better changes. Don't do anything just because it is in style. Find what will work best for your needs.

I would remove this island completely, as there isn't enough room for it. This kitchen is poorly designed, and needs a new approach.

I agree with removing the hanging cabinets, they close the space in too much. What about removing the snack bar/island and adding cabinets to the wall behind? Would that give you space for a table?
