Major Ivy Problem!!!

HELP!!! What is the best way for me to get rid of all of this ivy. It's growing up the tree. Can I just use a lawn mower and mow the large area around the tree...and surrounding area? I understand that I may have to cut the ivy out around the base and let the rest die on the tree. How long will that process take? I plan on doing this work myself. Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

That’s not too bad, you should have seen mine! Just start ripping it out, dig up the roots. If the ivy in the tree goes up to the crown just leave that. It will die pretty quickly and eventually lose its leaves. I would use newspaper (about 4/5 pages thick) and mulch to block newly sprouting ivy. I actually use paper yard waste bags that I cut open..newspaper are difficult to find! Just keep at it and within a couple of seasons-no more ivy!
