Macramé Then: Knotting wool, rope, leather, string and other fibers is a centuries-old skill. Macramé has Arabic origins, and it passed to France, Italy and China around the 14th century. It enjoyed a huge swell of popularity in Victorian England, but the craft fell into disuse until rediscovered in the ’60s. Now: Macramé has moved on from plant hangers to sophisticated new uses that infuse fun and quirkiness — even elegance — into modern interiors: lampshades, chair covers, bedspreads, throws, cushions and screens. It taps into the current craze for vintage everything and an increasingly popular craft movement. What’s more, it’s an easy-to-learn and therapeutic pastime requiring no equipment except two hands.
The Beaded Curtain Then: Beaded curtains were usually made of threaded glass, plastic, bamboo or acrylic beads, and were an affordable semiprivate barrier. They were popular in beach shacks and surf hangouts, where they let sea breezes waft through. The click and rustle of a beaded curtain found favor among hippies and devotees of feng shui. Now: The concept of a flexible, semiprivate barrier is tailor-made for modern, open-plan interiors. Today’s beaded curtains use ball chain construction in a variety of metals — stainless steel, brass, zinc, copper and powder-coated — to coordinate with decors. Metallic bead curtains look fantastic in loft-type conversions that favor hard, edgy industrial materials.

Designer Tips: How to Decorate a Living Room
The pattern above the fireplace was hand painted in the living room of my own home, and I liked the design so much I had it made into a stencil.
Grass cloth. This natural fiber adds wonderful depth, texture and interest to a wall. Charcoal designates the sleeping area of this room, while lighter walls serve as a backdrop for artwork nearby.
Dramatic draperies. The designer of this master bedroom in Chicago created drama in this serene space by adding floor-to-ceiling drapes. Even though the tops of the windows stop far short of the ceiling, the oversize drapes help lift the eye and highlight the room’s tall ceiling.
Custom ottoman and snack table. A clever ottoman-table combination brings even more flexibility to the arrangement. When the couple feel like having a snack or glass of wine, they can slide the glass-topped table within easy reach. When it’s not in use, they can slide the table back out of the way.

Ceiling moldings can look grand and very high-end in a modern home as well. Even just a few strips in a simple shape or pattern can beautifully frame a ceiling light and bring a sense of polish. Generally with thin moldings like this (2 inches wide or less) I would recommend painting them the same as the rest of the ceiling so the moldings remain a subtle element of architectural texture.
Molding Thin, delicate wall moldings bring a sense of sophistication to a ceiling, giving the whole surface a richer look without demanding as much attention as many of the previous options. The effect is subtle and is well-suited to a more formal or classical room design.
levated living room. The ceiling in this popular living room is a real showstopper. Within a delicate frame of white molding, the gold leaf pattern of the wallpaper finds an echo in the sunburst mirror, which has been secured to a joist in the middle of the ceiling.
