The pattern above the fireplace was hand painted in the living room of my own home, and I liked the design so much I had it made into a stencil.
Grass cloth. This natural fiber adds wonderful depth, texture and interest to a wall. Charcoal designates the sleeping area of this room, while lighter walls serve as a backdrop for artwork nearby.
Dramatic draperies. The designer of this master bedroom in Chicago created drama in this serene space by adding floor-to-ceiling drapes. Even though the tops of the windows stop far short of the ceiling, the oversize drapes help lift the eye and highlight the room’s tall ceiling.

Ceiling moldings can look grand and very high-end in a modern home as well. Even just a few strips in a simple shape or pattern can beautifully frame a ceiling light and bring a sense of polish. Generally with thin moldings like this (2 inches wide or less) I would recommend painting them the same as the rest of the ceiling so the moldings remain a subtle element of architectural texture.
