I love a garden as much at night as I do during the day. When temperatures are extreme in the day, I prefer to be out in the garden at dusk. Taking some empty wine bottles and white Christmas lights, I made a new twinkling addition to my garden. This project also got me thinking how easy it would to make an outdoor chandelier with the same materials….ideas for a few more wine bottles down the road. materials wine bottles, cleaned and labels removed (goo gone works great) string or two of white Christmas lights bamboo sticks (to stake in the garden) wire (if you want to hang them, just word of caution about water collecting in the bottle if it’s mouth is open to the sky)
Cord keeper Recharge your portable electronics — cell phone, iPod, BlackBerry, PDA — without getting your wires crossed. By repurposing a low-tech shoebox, you can organize and safeguard your high-tech accessories. STEP 1 Empty a clean, sturdy shoebox. Measure and cut wallpaper or decorative fabric to its dimensions, wrapping the top and bottom pieces separately. Secure the material with spray adhesive. STEP 2 On one long side of the box, measure and mark placement for four evenly spaced eyelet holes. Make the first hole about 3 inches in from the box's edge. Cut eyelet holes with an X-Acto knife. Repeat on the other long side, aligning holes so the wires cross through the box. STEP 3 Purchase an extra-large eyelet kit from a hardware store, and fit the pieces using the manufacturer's directions as a guide. Feed the wires through both sets of holes and close the lid; recharge your gadgets. Inspired by the animal wall pegs Marie-Kim Lavigne sells on Etsy, these agrarian organizers make the most of solid plastic toys (Schleich, from $5.75 each, 2 1/4" to 3 3/4"H; actionfarmtoys.com). First, cut each creature in half with a coping saw ($7.88; amazon.com). Then, using a no. 7 bit, drill a one-inch-deep hole in the center of the animal's flat end. Finish by twisting a 1/4"W x 2"L dowel screw ($1.18 for four; homedepot.com) into the hole, and mount the hardworking wee beast onto a wall using a drywall anchor.
