Kitchen upgrade

We painted the shelving green to bring in more color and tie the space together. During Corona shut-in, it became a home-schooling organization place, as well as a coffee bar. The copper vent hood takes on a new life when surrounded by green.

We reupholstered the existing bar stools to bring in the green in another location and eliminate the heavy black visual of the prior stools.

Black and white painted backsplash, knotty alder cabinets. Mackenzie-Childs events added for decor.

The new black and white checkerboard backsplash makes the copper vent hood pop. We also painted the 11-foot island white to visually break up the weight of the wood elements in the kitchen.

Step two: we decided to make a feature out of the bland travertine backsplash by incorporating a black and white checkerboard pattern painted on the existing tile.

Step one: add color above the cabinets. We went with a rich green so that we could keep cabinets brown and not spend money on filling the natural knots for painting.

The black countertops really made the whole room seem heavy.

The builder-grade cabinets were quality wood, but knotty alder has its challenges for resurfacing.
