I've started to think that something simple, even nothing except the mantel, or a flatter stone with mantel, might be nice, except much smaller expanse of stone, and no bench underneath the fireplace.

Or something like this might be nice. lower profile and less busy, picking up the wood from elsewhere in the room. I think I like this, or the flatter stone, much better than the stacked look, which looks really busy to me. however we wouldn't want it to be so wide or so tall

we both like this but want a wooden mantle on top

Charlie likes the wood surround on two sides. Claire would like the wood thinner. Neither of us like the pseudo chimney element.
