Adding applied molding is a cost-effective way to add a stunning feature to your foyer. These decorative millwork pieces are relatively inexpensive and can be applied to walls to create interesting patterns. You can choose to contrast the millwork with your wall color, or paint the millwork the same color as the walls, as shown here.

If you’re ever having a hard time deciding between knocking down a wall or keeping it up, this apartment in Germany might inspire you to a happy middle ground. By leaving the original door frame and studs standing and just removing the drywall, the designer created a sense of separation without losing any light.

Once herbs outgrow their containers, they can be moved into larger containers on a patio. Having one color or type of pot unifies the garden and brings the focus to the variety of herb leaves and colors.
Note the multitiered drainage that allows water from the plants above to filter to the plants below. Any excess is caught in bottles on the bottom layer so that every drop of water is conserved.

Add layers of lighting. In this kitchen seating area, the backsplash is lit, the artwork is highlighted and the cabinet interiors are filled with light. One central lighting fixture would not have had nearly the same dramatic result.

Use reclaimed wood anywhere you might worry about nicks and scratches. It's pretty forgiving, won't show dents and dings as prominently, and it adds warmth. Remember that light wood reads as yellow in terms of colors.
Framing a view in black can draw the eye in, but the downside is that you’ll lose the textural and sculptural aspect of the window mullions at night, because the darkness blends in with the blackness of the window pane. Also, be cautious with this approach. It’s probably best for north-facing rooms and homes, because dark trim fights against a sun-filled room.
Paint window trim black to frame the view.
Black-painted shelves flanking the fireplace help hide the gaping black holes that both fireplaces and TV's tend to be. Can you spot the TV in this picture?
Paint the ceiling black to conceal a mess. It can be tough to hide all the ductwork in a basement ceiling. Covering it with drywall can rob you of precious headroom (not to mention money). An inexpensive solution is to paint the whole thing black. It won’t eliminate the problem entirely, but it’ll make the mechanics far less prominent without lowering the ceiling’s height.
Paint the sides of the bookshelves rather than the back wall spaces.

The elegant finishes and cabinet details distract you from the fact that there are two large drawers beneath the cooktop for pots and pans, a pot filler and two narrow spice rack pullouts flanking the hood.
