They’re good at making things disappear. Got a door you want to downplay? Black is great at disguising shortcomings (like a large slab door, if that’s not your style) so you don’t notice them. Black doors work well in an open space like this, but avoid using them in a confined area with a confluence of doorways, as they can look chaotic.
Don't push the furniture against the wall. You will have a much more interesting space if you allow breathing room around your pieces of furniture, as we see here. Allow the furniture to float in the room, away from the walls. This will help create a conversation grouping. The optimal distance for conversational seating is 4 to 8 feet

View your colors in the space. Once you have established the requirements for natural light and its availability in your rooms, gather samples of colors you think you might like for each room. You can order these online from many paint and flooring companies. Be sure the samples are large (at least 6 by 9 inches), and multiples are a must. You can tape paint samples on the wall with painter’s tape affixed to the back; place flooring samples at the baseboard’s edge. Create a gallery wall. You may have some art pieces that have been out of rotation, are leaning against a wall on the floor or haven’t been framed yet. Now’s the time. What could have been a canvas swallowed up by too much wall is instead into a focal point. Other sure bets in arranging include an evenly spaced grid or a vertical column of art in matching frames.
