Thirsty House - A Manifesto for a Water-Scarce Future
The Thirsty House stands as a residual trace and a lasting memorial to the threatened resource, water, to evoke the awareness of the on-going water crisis and propose a frugal way of living in relationship to water.
Natural water flow on the site is materialized and augmented in the folded, rippling single surface geometry, which defines chambers of different levels of privacy, soft boundary and directionality. The spatial experience would be a mix of intimacy as if in an underground a cave and immensity in a mystically sculpted landscape.
Rainwater and ground water runoff are collected and purified along the stretch of the house to sustain basic living needs, now arranged in the order of optimized water reuse: from drinking to toilet flushing. Excessive water usage is not accommodated. The main structure will be plastic composites and wood, both having minimum embodied water usage compared to other materials. Hydrophobic paper, water repellent metal surfaces (titanium coating) and glass glazing will be installed afterwards for the experiential and functional quality of the house.
