Browns Bounce Back The trend that came up the most among designers and builders was the resurgence of shades of brown. “Brown seems to be making a comeback,” says designer Raychel Wade, who used terra-cotta wallpaper in the home office shown here. But there’s a lot of variation in the color of brown and its uses throughout a home. Taupes, beiges, sands — basically any earth tone seems to be gaining popularity. “I believe that there’s a trend back toward browns and beiges,” designer Kelly Nelson says. “Lord knows people still love gray, but I think there’s been a shift toward grays with brown undertones — greiges, if you will — that don’t feel sterile or industrial and which work well with both grays and browns. I, for one, am happy to welcome the browns back.”
LEATHER TILES?? How to Install Leather Tiles In contrast with traditional leather paneling, leather tiles are easier to install, thanks to portable installation systems that are great for DIYers to tackle. In tiles that use Velcro systems, each leather tile is backed by little hooks, and the wall gets prepped with a layer of loops — kind of like the two pieces that stick together on Velcro shoes. For design junkies, the aesthetic possibilities of the flexibility can be head-spinning. The other option is magnetic systems, in which a flexible magnetic backing is added to each tile, allowing it to adhere to any metal surface, or any surface painted with several coats of magnetic paint infused with iron dust. The iron dust — not the paint itself — attracts the magnetic backing of the leather tile. Once the paint has dried, the rough texture of the wall is sanded smooth, and the leather tiles are applied. Magnetic leather tiles need no glue for installation.
CEMENT TILES Using the same technique, some manufacturers and designers have begun to explore new patterns for cement tile. The Drops collection, shown here, was designed by Spanish studio Mut Design and introduced in 2012 by Enticdesigns, based in Valencia, Spain. Kitchen by enticdesigns enticdesigns SaveEmail “The Drops collection caused a stir in the industry because it was one of the first reworkings that gave a twist to the classic patterns and rigid layout that characterize this type of flooring,” Mut Design founder Alberto Sánchez says. While a certain type of cement tile has traditionally featured geometric patterns, Drops offers something new by enabling the creation of a random design. “We believe this is something that hasn’t been done before,” Sánchez says. “The cement tile has tended to have a rigid layout, with a single tile from which homogenous designs and patterns are obtained. As well as a beautiful design, we were looking for something more, which is why we designed an open layout system based on four tiles with certain variations, which allow us to play with the pattern and create different rhythms across spaces.” That approach is reflected in this kitchen fl...
The designer continues the celebration of his home country on the walls of the bedroom. He asked another cousin to photograph the 4- by 4-inch blue and white tiles that people associate with the region. He enlarged those images, and master decorative painters Linda Horning and Katherine Jacobus re-created them over a series of 24- by 24-inch Masonite tiles, giving them a crackle glaze that fools the eyes into believing they are looking at an ancient ceramic surface.

POWDER ROOM WALL The powder room, off the office, is under a flight of stairs. “It’s a small and oddly shaped room, so we wanted to make it feel bigger and also add some drama,” Larkin says. To achieve this goal, he lined the vanity wall in antiqued custom-cut mirrors. Mirror tiles: custom, Ty Larkins Interiors

CHILDREN'S ART WALL While we’re on the subject of children, kids’ art is some of the most joyous, unconstrained, charming and heartwarming work on the planet. (And it’s really cheap!) It does not have to be framed; just hang it on the wall and enjoy. Your little ones will be absolutely delighted, and will probably deluge you with enough material to keep your walls ever changing and ever vital.
WALL DECOR These leaves make an organic (not to mention clever) statement on the wall. This would be a particularly fun project to enjoy with your kids or grandkids or neighborhood children. Have your diminutive helpers collect the leaves, then press them between the pages of a nice, heavy book before mounting them on paper and hanging them on the wall.

PAINT COLOR Regan Baker DesignSave to IdeabookEmail Photo Beige. A basic beige is a must-have for my paint arsenal. I love beige all through the house punctuated with bold color and other neutrals. Loved for its versatility, beige is also a great choice as a backdrop for an art collection. This elegant entry is painted in Sherwin-Williams' Accessible Beige SW7036.
PAINT COLOR Mark Newman DesignSave to IdeabookEmail Photo Brown. Although beige tends to get a bad rap, there's a reason this color is so popular: It's hard to get wrong. Use a lighter shade for more soothing spaces and venture into dark chocolate browns to mix things up.

REFRESHING COLORED BATHROOM This fresh yellow-green hue is a favorite of mine and looks fantastic on the tub in this mostly white bathroom. Think about picking up the bathtub color elsewhere in the room, such as was done with the wall covering here, or with other decorative elements.
PAINT COLORS WITH A DASH Suggested Palette: With a Dash of Bold Orange If, like me, you find Breath of Fresh Air a bit too soft, punch it up by adding a splash of your favorite bold hue. Here I added a carrot-orange color to the mix. Because blue and orange are complementary colors, opposites on the color wheel, they offer maximum contrast, making this a bold and high-energy palette. Again, I’d use the lighter colors in larger doses with smaller bits of the bold orange thrown in as an accent.

PAINT COLORS, THE NEW NEUTRALS Suggested Palette: The New Neutrals This palette combines Breath of Fresh Air with two other featured colors from Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends 2014. These new neutrals are an elegant and modern alternative to tan and beige. Use one of the lighter hues for the main wall color, then add smaller accents of all three colors throughout the space.

PAINT COLORS Gamboge is a deep mustard yellow. This color gets its name from the gamboge tree, which excretes a sap that is mustard yellow. This pair of sofas is the perfect shade of gamboge.
PAINT COLORS Smalt is a deep blue pigment typically used in ceramics. Smalt is a glass that is created when cobalt salts are added to molten glass. It has a very subtle purple undertone but is better described as a pure blue. Much like cobalt, it has a luminescent quality, making it look backlit. This wall is a good example.
PAINT COLORS Black. A surprisingly elegant choice for any room, black looks great against most colors. When using black, try contrasting it with crisp white trim and punchy colors in fabrics or rugs. I prefer to see an eggshell finish on walls, and black looks particularly sophisticated in eggshell. This regal bedroom boasts a beautiful shade of black called Beluga, by Behr.
PAINT COLORS White. White is really one of the most asked-about colors. The perfect white is sought after for cabinets and trim. Undertones in white paint are important and can really shift a palette. My favorite pure white is White Dove OC-17, by Benjamin Moore. This white, shown here in this gorgeous kitchen, is crisp with no undertones. It looks great against any color.
PAINT COLORS Gray. A popular color for modern and transitional interiors, gray is a unique neutral. I love a soft charcoal gray paired with creamy whites and beige. Try gray with a punch of chartreuse for a surprising combination that really works. This dramatic great room is painted in Dunn-Edwards' Baby Seal DE 6361.
PAINT COLORS Blue. One of my favorite choices for a bedroom is a soft sky blue with a subtle sage undertone. Blue is calming and a logical choice for slumber-inducing relaxation. This bedroom is painted in Benjamin Moore's Quiet Moments 1563, which is best paired with a crisp white.

PAINT COLORS Yellow. One of the trickiest paint colors to get right is yellow, but this shade is just right. A tip for picking a yellow from a paint fan deck: Select something that looks almost beige. Yellow is always much brighter on a wall than on a paint chip.
FAMILY PORTRAITS You have: Photos of loved ones Make: Silhouette artwork You can create custom silhouettes using a program like Illustrator or Photoshop, or with a silhouette cutter. But if those methods don’t work for you, you can still do it the old-fashioned way: Print a photo of your subject (facing to the side against a contrasting background) and trace it onto black paper, then carefully cut it out using a craft knife. Framed and matted silhouettes make wonderful gifts for grandparents and doting aunties.

WALL TREATMENT Natalie Holbrook's new apartment was an upgrade in size and style from her previous tiny, prewar home. While the kitchen was a step up, it was still small and lacked any unique style. When she first moved in, Holbrook wanted to cover this wall in wallpaper, but the potentially messy installation and expensive price tag dissuaded her.

A PHOTO MURAL “A photo mural covers one wall of the children’s lounge room.
