Adventure is the product of an uninhibited expressive imagination. The play expressed by children in an imaginative scenario is one of pure conscious. The dynamic canvas below is intended to let children play out their imaginative adventures through a series of tactile experiences.
The interior and exterior of the structure both exhibiting the warmth and natural environment of wood, allow the structure to have the freedom to morph into the fabric of the imagination. Is it a house, a fort, a ship, or anywhere the mind may take us. Approaching the structure one is immediately greeted by a contrasting metal clad center-pivoting door. This creates a scenario of interest within itself. This is likely very different than most doors encountered in a child’s daily life; making the space unique to them outside world of home and school.
Once within, the interior space can be utilized in any manner that one may wish to furnish. The space is flanked on one wall with a series of penetrations connecting the inside with the outside. Opposite low on the wall is a porthole to crawl to safety within another realm.
The sandbox, through the porthole, is contained within a 3 sided space within the footprint of the structure. The sandbox is open to the outdoors and has an upper narrow opening to provide shade, interest, and another surface for play.
Appealing to the meaning of the word adventure; the danger of safely scaling an internal ladder awaits. Moving up the ladder within the interior of the structure, one is taken to the upper deck. Here we find the wheelhouse. Much like a shielded armature wrapping the top and side of the playhouse, the narrow object is as dynamic as the door below. Allowing the imagination to flow, the armature can be positioned anywhere across the width of the space, controlling shade, space and light, with the simple turn of the ships wheel. The rack and pinion gears, idler pulleys, and support structure is completely visible, further appealing to the experience while subtly teaching the basics of mechanics and gears. The overhead armature system is strong enough to allow a hammock to be suspended below for afternoons napping or diving further into classic imagination resources like reading a book in the afternoon shade. The placement of the armature circles ones intentions back to the interior space below. The dynamic nature of movement allows one to control the overlap of the side openings allowing the sunlight to vary in its concentration within.
