ACT 1: Let the Adventure Begin
There are few things more intriguing to children than an elevated stage. This adventure begins in every child’s imagination. Dramatic play allows children to break through the walls of reality and become who they aspire to be. We have seen our own children imagine themselves performing, giving speeches, coordinating choreography, giving out awards, singing and acting. Stepping up on stage is transformational.
We’ve designed the ACT 1 Theater Playhouse as an environment enabling children to step up and imagine themselves in unlimited and creative roles. Curtains can be used for private or public performances. Abstract monkey bars used as “backstage rigging” provide ways for children to climb up the wall and monkey bar over to the stage. The“orchestra pit” connects children from beneath the stage to backstage below, and gives a different, private, and protected space contrasting from the mainstage feel above. The stage also includes a “whiteboard backdrop” where children can create their own scenery.
In the Backstage area, a ladder lifts children to a bunk area for reading, or over to the puppet theater where performances can be viewed from outside. From the puppet theater level children can exit again through a portal and monkey bar over on the rigging back to mainstage.
The ACT 1 Theater provides variety of public and private spaces creating areas of more inward focused play to dramatic play through the abstract divide of backstage and mainstage.
Research is endless on how dramatic role play improves children’s social and cognitive skills. Building skills in communication and social interaction through imaginary environments will be some of the most important building blocks of a child’s future development - building confidence along the way.
