A Cosmic Adventure
For many of us, who grew up during the space race and were inspired by TV shows that made us dream of the adventure of traveling and exploring the cosmos, the blackness of space with brilliant dots of light sparkling with enticing glow was an opportunity to wonder “what is out there?”. When we realized that we could sit under that massive sky show and we understood that there was nothing between our hands and the cosmic bodies above, as we reached up to touch them, it was a mind tease of “what if”. What if by some magic we could jump up and keep moving toward those bodies and land on them to explore them. And then a friend showed us we could see more through a telescope. “WOW, that is so cool”. Suddenly Star Trek, Space Odyssey 2001 and then our moon landing put us into a state of reality to dream big. We can do this!!!
To me that is my definition of “Adventure”. Give kids the opportunity to look up and use technology to explore and ask “why not me”? Ask today’s astronauts what inspired them to dream big and accomplish their dreams of space travel. We owe it to our youth to have that opportunity to have the tools to dream and inquire of that for which they feel a wonderment that could cause them to accomplish their dreams. Night sky viewing never gets old, is constantly changing scenery and still contains monumental unanswered questions. Why not them? With their own Dream Observatory they can get started on that quest for Adventure.
