Dillon Kyle Architects began working on this playhouse design for Girls Inc. of Greater Houston in conjunction with their 20th Anniversary Celebration where they are launching ‘Project Playhouse’ which provides a chance for girls to learn about building trades, having fun out doors, and engaging in imaginative play. Our playhouse will be on display for ten days at Discovery Green – a local urban park which offers green space and public art displays. These playhouses will then be auctioned off for the Girl’s “Frolic on the Green” – Strong, Smart, and Bold Celebration Event. The proceeds will directly benefit the work of Girls Inc. of Greater Houston.
DKA’s innovative design employs a play on typologies. The leaf paneling on the exterior, creates a filtered lighting condition on the interior, similar to that of being in a tree canopy. The drawbridge doors pull down to become a bridge. The ceiling is milled and painted with tiny little stars; while the pitch is like being in a tent. With one structure it can be many things – day or night. Our playhouse adventure is brought about by the imagination of a wandering child’s mind: A bridge to where? Which forest am I in today? Where will I be sleeping tonight – under the Little Dipper or the Southern Cross?
Light filters in through the canopy via the orange-pink sunset; monkeys are howling; leaves are falling with the breeze as a storm blows in; the birds have long last gone quiet – hunkered away from the storm – you lay comfortably in your little tree house with all the things that matter to you most—your black cat, Bagheera; your Teddy Baloo; where you are in the steamy jungles of India. And as your tale grows weary of this adventure, the tree house transforms into a tent in the barren Atacama Desert; and then a rickety bridge over the mighty Nile—your adventure and imagination goes wild.
The DKA playhouse feels daring yet familiar – providing a sense of security to the imagineers – here in this solid yet permeable tree house – a child’s mind is free to roam. Their familiar, yet venturesome playhouse structure is truly a blank canvas for our adventurers to go out into “their” world and explore “their” imaginative play!
