The idea of “Adventure” includes the undertaking or enterprise of hazardous nature and/or an unusual or exciting experience…
As a child, I always loved adventure and, as part of that interest, I immersed myself in the exploration of colors, textures, heights, light, and shadows, etc.
This project reminds me of those experiences from my childhood…
The main entrance to the playhouse is located on the front left side, and provides access to a compressed truncated pyramid space. That space is visually connected to the metal structure in the back, stimulating children to find the way to get to that area and has a floor covered with wire mesh, which allows children to feel the difference in the texture of the surface and to hear the sound produced by the friction between the material and their shoes, when they move through the space. It visually connects to the space on top of it, through a tempered glass ceiling. This raises curiosity in children and stimulates kids to go up through the other spaces in the playhouse. It, also, provides access to the space on the right side, which has an arrangement of platforms that have different heights for the children to have the experience of climbing over them or crawling around the center platform which is the highest one on the arrangement. The space right behind the platforms space is a double height space that is surrounded by vertical wood studs which simulate trunks of trees and create an interesting pattern of light and shadows in the area. This space encourages children to go up the ladder on the wall or challenges them to use the provided fireman pole, trying to reach the upper level, or perhaps, going up the ladder and sliding down again. The floor in this space is covered with a protective shock-absorbing surface material that prevents injuries if they jump. At the same time, this space provides access to the upper right side room, which is a colorful room with colored tiles and openings painted in different colors that will reflect the color gamma in its interior surfaces. The second to last space, is an inverted truncated pyramid on top of the main entrance. This space opens to the front and exterior of the playhouse through a round tempered glass which allows visual interaction between children in the outside and inside of the playhouse. To the back of this space, is the last space of the tour, which comprises a double height space enclosed in a metal structure covered by wire mesh. This space allows for total ventilation and natural illumination in the space creating another interesting pattern of light and shadows. This space has a set of chains hanging from the joints of the metal structure which allows kids to hang from them and use them as rocking hangers,or simply walk through them before they decide to exit the playhouse. The exit is located in the back and through the metal frame.
This is a design that will give children the experience of adventure by having imaginative play through compressed spaces, open spaces, crawling, climbing, jumping, stretching, light, shadow, transparencies, textures, patterns, different heights, views, colors, sound; all enclosed in a playhouse that calls their attention by having a combination of different volumes that give the playhouse the appearance of a toy with different parts that could be assembled and/or disassembled.
