In the 1970’s and early 80’s my family lived on a small, modest farm in a tiny Missouri town. Like many young siblings, when my brother and I put our heads together it wasn’t hard to stay mischievously occupied. The best afternoons were spent up in the branches of the big oak tree in our backyard. It was almost as if the tree had grown purposefully for our childhood pleasure. It had low limbs just right for climbing and lots of knots that came in handy as imaginary buttons and gadgets when we pretended the tree was our spaceship, which was quite often.
For the Houzz 2016 Playhouse Design Contest, I wish to share this favorite childhood memory of mine, presented in the form of a playground-sized Spaceship Voyager! On the ground level is the “Gear Room” where young mechanics can make adjustments for a smooth ride by toying with beads on wires, wheel cranks and blocks on spindles. When approaching unchartered territories, the crew can stay concealed from aliens in the “Bunker”. To prepare for take-off, young pilots will climb up to the “Cockpit” and set the flight pattern with buttons, knobs and levers. With a thrust of the throttle and a pull on the yoke, it’s LIFT-OFF! Two bubble shaped ‘windshields’ allow for a expansive view of galaxies beyond while en-route to exploring strange planets. If ever the pilots must abandon ship, the “Escape Capsule” will save the day.
With fun shapes, colors, materials and details, this playhouse will surely be a special place for little explorers to embark on big adventures. Hopefully it will inspire many fond memories, too.
