Closet idea in story on defeating clutter.... Some people are not in the practice of hanging up their jackets or putting away their beauty supplies. Patterns like these can cause a state of disarray at home. But it’s not impossible to establish new habits. I recommend trying an approach called “the habit loop,” from the bestselling book The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg, which I outlined in this story. Essentially, it involves three steps: cue, routine and reward. The cue is a reminder that initiates a new behavior. The routine is the behavior itself. The reward is the benefit you get from doing the new behavior. It’s a method that has worked well for me as well as for some of my organizing clients.

Originally a Habitat for Humanity house built in 1999, the 1,400-square-foot shotgun-style abode was expanded by bringing the house closer to the street, in line with the neighboring structures.

Island. “Given that we were a bit limited with wall space for large appliances, we worked a set of freezer drawers into the island, across from the full-sized Sub-Zero refrigerator column,” designer Emily Karempelis says. “This prevented us from having to step up the overall width of a refrigerator-freezer combination unit.” There’s also a microwave drawer, placed in the island to keep the look of the kitchen streamlined and to have it near the pantry and refrigerator. Dining Room (After)Custom-made leaded-glass doors, new built-in cupboards and graceful new crown, window, door and base moldings all appear to have been there from the start.
Dining Room (Before)A serviceable dining room offered plenty of space but not much charm.
Fireplace: The area that now includes the fireplace used to be part of a small den. The builders raised the fireplace and covered it in marble tile. It’s wood-burning and adds cozy warmth during Portland’s damp, gray winters. The large kitchen window is new, as are the built-ins with leaded glass doors. Custom-designed light fixtures add a special touch here and throughout the house. .... The ceiling beams are new. Carrara marble tile covers the walls. Countertops are Pietra Gray quartz, and Pyrolave glazed lava covers the island. The new mudroom is visible through the door at the back of the photo.
Kitchen (Before)Relocating the kitchen created space for a mudroom and powder room on the main floor, as well as the opportunity to design a new kitchen that was a complete departure from the previous worn cabinets and tile countertops.

While the home had been well-loved, it needed a major renovation to meet the new owners’ needs for their young family. Scope of work: The renovation included extensively digging out the basement to create ceiling height for a guest bedroom and bath, powder room, family room and wine cellar; new footings and retrofitted foundation walls; relocating the kitchen; adding a mudroom and powder room; reworking the master bedroom to create a large master bath and two walk-in closets; and finishing the third-floor attic space to create a cozy work and play room. A new outdoor fireplace turned the patio into a three-season space.
The guest bathroom was renovated on a budget. “We received a new tub and toilet from my parents, who happened to be demo-ing their home to rebuild. The vanity I found for $100 at a repurposed building supply store, and the tile was custom cut and laid by my husband,” Lindy says.
AFTER: Next to the stairs is a little nook with a built-in bench and storage for jackets and other items. Lindy made the pillows in the hanging chair, and she also took the framed photograph, in San Diego. The hanging chair was a lucky thrift store find.Picture frame: Ikea

AFTER: The couple poured the concrete countertops themselves as a DIY project. Lindy made the pendant light using a light kit from Ikea and a basket from Ross. The $30 sink and $60 wood island were both thrift store finds. “The wood island is actually my favorite piece in the home and has a great back story. I found it at the thrift store for $60. And while looking for any indication of age or manufacturer, I found a small brown piece of paper nailed to the underside with just some French words handwritten in pencil.”

After removing the kitchen’s upper cabinets, the couple installed open floating shelves to hold their dinnerware. “My open shelving was a mess and needed a little refresh,” Lindy says.Shelving accessories, including cutting boards, cookbooks, pitcher and planters: McGee & Co.
Heavy-duty floors. With an active dog, older cat and two small girls, durable floors were a must. Since scratchability was a big concern, Baltzer Varga went with the homeowner to test options. “We scratched the samples with our keys,” she says. Ultimately, they landed on a vinyl style made with recycled wood and bamboo dust. “This isn’t cheap flooring by any means,” she says. The planks are made to last and look like high-end hardwood. Not only are they eco-friendly, scratch-resistant and 100 percent waterproof (great for aging or untrained pets), they also have a cork layer that dampens sound. “You don’t hear the clicking sound of heels,” she says.Flooring: Coretec Plus XL-E in Waddington Oak, US Floors
Kitchen flooring...this is clif home so could be cedar or fir...good color reminds me of old heart pine with reddish tint.... tongue and groove ceiling with rails.

Craftsman trim room example There are broad variations in this style, but this diagram shows a combination that’s very common in Craftsman houses. Notice that the crown has the cyma found in classical architecture but is quite a bit simpler than the crown moldings of Victorian and Colonial times. Trim around doors and windows is normally very simple and flat, with eased edges, although header caps are frequently used, as shown here. The tiny trim at the base of the header and at the top of the door frame is called a stop. Some designs have plinth blocks, as shown below, or the door trim extends straight and flush to the floor. Although there is a base shoe here, notice that the baseboard has no detail — just an eased edge.

KITCHEN 10. Spring for a pullout drying rack. It doesn’t matter how many dishwashers you have; you’ll always be air-drying a few pieces in your kitchen. If you’ve got room in your budget for a little splurge, consider a pullout drying cart like the one shown in this Northern California kitchen. It takes the place of a cabinet right next to the sink and keeps the clutter off the countertop.
Kitchen of the week.....calls it French industrial style but really Uber-rich NY/NJ style with lush landscaping and apparently huge need to host lotsa folks along with bright bright bright look.....BUT lots of good ideas I’ve liked that can be scaled down ... slide ing barn door that covers and uncovers...island (not as many) style .... pendant usage along with other, black trim on windows... slight bumpout. Great example of TYPE of PLAN THAT NEEDS TO BE DRAWN and designer help in flow and symmetry.
