Some bedrooms defy categorization but still work so well. Here, the mural of black-and-white palm trees might lead one toward more tropical colors, but instead designer Margaux Ceada opted for white linens and rich, dark accents in gray, gold and bronze. Soft white drapery panels lend easy, breezy style, and the ceiling light fixture adds just the right amount of texture and punch.
At the Mylands paint stand, head of marketing Julia Lindquist told us she’s never seen customers be so bold. The brand’s new color palette includes vibrant reds, greens and blues, but one of the most interesting trends she’s noticed this year is for gold paint, which customers are using in all sorts of interesting and creative ways.
The wall opposite the bed in the master bedroom is covered in a light blue-gray silk. A pair of framed hand-painted wallpaper panels featuring a chinoiserie design add color to the room.

“Sage green looks brilliant as a backdrop for plants,” Garrett says. “Wallpaper is another great way to add sage green to your interior. “If you choose to do a feature wall in sage green, I’d suggest using it across a fairly small area, such as a wall in the bathroom or entrance, either in paint or tiles.”

Mix and match. Headboard fabric and wallpaper from the same manufacturer line but in different colors give this bedroom its polished look. Go for a fairly subtle monochrome repeat pattern, as shown here, or really up the ante with bright colors and a bold design.
Go luxe with velvet. Tactile fabrics are great for adding a glamorous touch to a bedroom. A vintage-style headboard like this is a luxurious choice, and the rich moss color and ornate chartreuse wallpaper behind it add another layer of sophistication. The rest of the room is simple, allowing the bed area to take center stage.
Style with tile. A headboard doesn’t have to be traditional. This arrangement of octagonal tiles fixed on the wall adds a decorative element in a different way. Wooden planks, vintage shutters, stencils or blocks of painted color are variations on this idea.
Seek out a retro version. Rattan, wicker and bamboo styles lend a boho, 1970s-inspired feel to a room. Trawl eBay and vintage specialists for something similar to this. Remember, you can always paint it a different color to tie in with your scheme.
Tone it down. Alternatively, you can use a perfectly plain headboard to break up bold wallpaper. In this striking monochrome design, the square shape of the headboard echoes the geometric design on the wallpaper, and the neat pillows and sleek bedside tables reinforce the uniform look.
Go hot and cold. In this open-plan studio apartment, the concrete walls give the space a cool, industrial vibe. To bring some coziness to the bedroom, the designers simply added a panel of wood behind the bed.
