After meeting with several high quality construction companies, we decided on going with Phil Barker for our full house renovation project in Kahala. Prior to tackling this project, I had not come across a single soul who had a positive renovation experience and was braced for friction and tough sledding. Working with Phil and his crew was shockingly anything but. Phil was a true partner in our renovation and genuinely had our best interests in mind from beginning to end. He contributed many ideas throughout the project, stepped up to figure out challenges when the designs were insufficient, challenged me on changes he felt weren't worth the $ and advocated for the finished product he knew we'd be happy with for the long term. One thing I particularly appreciated about Phil is that he's a perfectionist. There were times where the work from the subs wasn't done just right; he had no problem bringing them back to redo the work until it met his (and our) satisfaction. He even had his team redo the work in some instances on his own dime to make sure it was done in the highest quality manner. I can't say enough positive things about our project working with Phil and the Barker Kappelle team. Phil takes pride in his work and will do whatever is required to deliver the highest quality result. He is very fair when there are disagreements, finds a solution that's amenable to both parties, is very resourceful in delivering results and was great to work with. I would highly recommend Phil and Barker Kappelle if you are seeking someone to deliver a high quality construction project on Oahu.

We are extremely happy with our new home built by BKC. Project included demolition of about 85% of our old house and then BKC built us the home of our dreams. Project was completed within the timeframe originally given to us and on budget. I have and will continue to recommend BKC.

BKC carried out a one-year full remodel of our 40-year old, 4 bedroom, three story house in Kaneohe and we were extremely happy with their work. They were very professional throughout: communicative, patient with our questions, an excellent, trustworthy crew and they just did a wonderful job. There were several issues along the way such as termite damage and a good few change orders, but it progressed smoothly all the way and we could not be happier with the final product that we have now lived in for a year. My wife and I returned to Hawaii after spending nine-years on the mainland because of my job. Our first goal was to do a major remodel of our Honolulu house. We researched remodeling/construction websites and magazines which is how we found Barker Kappelle Construction (BKC). We were impressed with their work and contacted BKC while still on the mainland. Initially, we spoke with Phillip Barker through a series of phone calls focusing on the ‘big picture’ options. Phillip was very pleasant and patient with us and was able to vocalize the process and expected results in a way we could easily understand. We selected BKC after getting to know and trust Phillip, based on BKC’s years of experience, and touring recent BKC projects. After a few meetings at our house and the BKC office, to define the scope of the project and document the styles and features we liked, Phillip introduced us to an architect to create the plans. Throughout the entire construction process, BKC personnel were very professional and courteous, including the project manager, office staff and licensed sub-contractors The following are key attributes we believe make BKC successful. • Vision: All along the project, Phillip made helpful suggestions on how to improve the existing plans, including key design features. We appreciated this because it is hard to properly envision every major and minor detail from the original plans. As the project progressed and pieces were built, various opportunities arose allowing for improvements. Whereas other contractors might proceed strictly to plan, Phillip would present key suggestions, in a timely manner, which improved results greatly. • Workmanship: BKC performed high quality work and used the best materials to ensure the results endure. I witnessed occasions where the work was redone or modified to guarantee it looks best. If a product arrived with a small nick or scratch, BKC sent it back to the manufacturer for a replacement. BKC pays attention to minor details, which may seem insignificant at the time, but make a huge difference in the end. My wife especially appreciated how clean the worksite was kept at the end of each day. • Communication: We had frequent communications during the project, including discussing next steps, milestones, or when decisions were needed. Again, from my friends’ experiences with contractors this is a rare positive attribute. Personally, this helped reduce our anxiety on such a large endeavor. Whenever changes were decided, BKC provided us with documentation and got our approval before proceeding. • Trustfulness: Philip and BKC earned our trust which put us at ease knowing short-cuts were not taken and the end results was high quality. After hearing horror stories from friends, for example, my co-worker paid an unlicensed contractor all monies upfront for construction of a new house which they lost when the contractor skipped town. Other examples relate to shoddy workmanship which eventually requires the work to be pulled-out and redone. Now that our major remodeling is done, I can say BKC met all our expectations and were upfront on costs and outcomes (i.e. no negative surprises). Overall, we were very pleased with our remodeled home and thank BKC for their great work! John & Yoko White

My husband and I have been wanting to repair our wooden decks for years. The wood would rot after two few years and the maintenance was exhausting, not to mention expensive. So we decided to get a few bids from three different contractors, and BKC was one of them. We almost went with the first low bid but we were glad we didn't. After meeting with Philip, we realized that he knew what he was doing. He did not just take our order and gave us a bid, but instead he advised us on the pros and cons of our option. He explained why it would not be suitable for our situation because our decks have a lot sun exposure. He recommended tiling them and we are so glad we took his advice. The decks look amazing and it's going to last forever. From start to end, the project went very smoothly. They completed the work on a timely basis and we really love our decks now. These guys are so efficient, so honest and do what they promise. We would highly recommend BKC to anyone who wants a highly competent, honest and efficient contractor. I called BKC as a recommendation from my Mom who had worked with them on her kitchen renovation over 10 years ago. They were a pretty small business then, and how they have grown since! Looking at their current projects and finished jobs, they seemed to be totally out of reach for us. They're well known in Hawaii, and I've learned that the reputation they have is a well deserved one. We wanted to put a two story extension on the back of our little house in Kaneohe. The inital bid amount can be scary for a homeowner to see. Most of us wouldn't even give our own family members this kind of dough, let alone a contractor whom we may have met once. BKC was not the cheapest of the bids, but I believe you get what you pay for. And after sitting with Phil for a couple of meetings, I had the gut feeling that our project would be in good hands. And I have not been dissapointed. Phil was available throughout the entire process through email, phone or text. He was on site regularly to make sure the project was going as expected. He provided honest feedback and has an eye design, color and detail. The BKC field crew worked seamlessly with the subs and ensured that the work was up to the level of BKC standards. He worked with our budget, but was also was honest about where to squeeze a little bit more so that we could elevate our home. Those extra investments is going to result in an absolutely amazing home for our family. We absolutely would recommend BKC's team for any and all of your future home endeavors.

I recently had the pleasure of working with the Barker Kappelle team on a home remodel. And having been through the building process a number of times previously (with different builders) I can honestly say that I'm surprised that the word "pleasure" would be the one I would choose to describe an experience which, in the past, has so often been frustrating -- to say the least. LOL The entire BK team was professional, polite and enjoyable to work with. They handled "glitches" (which are always eventual) in the process with promptness and ease. Additionally, I have never had any workers in my home who were more respectful, especially concerning the issue of cleaning up after themselves daily (we were still living in part of the home while the remodel was going on). And perhaps the most wonderful part of working with them was that they started the job and "stayed with it" until completion each and every day (this honestly shouldn't be a surprise or something to receive praise about but quite frankly it has not been my experience that this is a "norm" in the construction industry) I would highly recommend BK Construction to anyone considering a new building project or home remodel.

From start to finish we were impressed by their professionalism, knowledge, and most importantly QUALITY of workmanship and level of SERVICE!

The job was a complete gut of a 2400 square foot condo apartment down to the slab--everything (electrical, plumbing, walls, flooring, appliances, cabinets, all finishes--were new. The contractor and all of its subs were professional and very pleasant as individuals. We had very few change orders and they were reasonably priced. Everyone took great pride in their workmanship and we came in a little ahead of schedule and on budget. This contractor has also responded promptly to all punch list items. Project was particularly difficult because work could be done only during restricted hours and there was only one small elevator to use to bring in materials and equipment. Contractor worked well with resident manager for the building. Date given below is approximate completion date.

Very beautiful work. They are well known in Hawaii. Other contractors speak highly of them as well. That's really a good sign. I enjoy following their work on Houzz.

Our experience working with Phil and the entire staff at BKC was nothing short of extraordinary. Phil had an easy going and down to earth manner that immediately put us at ease. He made great suggestions and was hands on throughout the entire project. He expected and received the highest possible quality of work from his crew and subcontractors.
