When someone takes advantage of you or rips you off you are always torn between embarrassment and letting the world know. Over 1 year ago Adam and his father Steve quoted on a job. The price was fair and a contract was signed. It was apparent after the work was started that the subcontractor had no idea what he was doing. He in fact admitted that it was his first retaining wall he has ever done. Steve came to the job site after months and months of false promises ( Makes every excuse in the book, a total disregard for other people time). He finally came and agreed to send another crew and would do a bunch of other work to complete the contract.(in writing) After a year of waiting the work has not been completed. He said he would refund some money so we could get another crew to complete it ( estimates are 10-15k based on quotes to fix the crap) now he says take me to court. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS GUY SAVE YOURSELF THE AGGRAVATION
it is now Oct, 1.5 years later and they refuse to complete the work that they were paid for...

In May of 2019 I had a decayed deck replaced, a cabana re-shingled with cedar, a 3-season room attached to the house, and a side gate installed. All were really well done with good materials. The project was completed in a timely manner. My family is very happy with the outcome. We will likely ask the company to quote on a backyard fence replacement next year.
Overall, high quality work. No mishaps.

This company was subcontracted to repair a fence. The owner claimed the contract was valid and work would be completed by April 30th 2017. Here we are Mid-May and the work has not been done.
When asked why the work was not completed, the owner claims that he voided the contract.
I am now stuck without a proper fence.
Stay away from this shady business.

Comment from The Fence and Deck Centre:
Hello Mr. Serchuk, I look after the Facebook page and the Houzz page. I have found your reviews and find them troubling. I can not find a contract with your name on it. However I am given to understand the contract was with your neighbour. Your neighbour contracted us to build a deck, and this was an add on, as we normally do not do repairs. I saw the contract you sent to Steve, and it was written paid, however we can not find the credit card transaction or the cheque deposit record. If you believe this job has been paid, please ask your neighbour how he paid for the work and to produce certified information such as the cancelled cheque or credit statement/receipt. To this day we have not received payment in any form for the job, and are not willing to do work without being paid. Your dispute with your neighbour and not with us. As you can see from the reviews, we strive to do the best for our customers. Your neighbour has not responded to us since the end of March and has returned no phone calls or emails since then.
DO NOT USE THESE GUYS!!!
The owner, Steve, will promise you the world and would not deliver. If there are any issues with the deck they will just ignore you.
I went with Steve because he promised that he could finish the deck in two weeks. They were definitely not the cheapest option either.
I'll start with the minor problems. I had the deck built in the summer of 2015. Steve sent Derek to do my job. Derek would show up around noon and leave around 6pm. With those working hours of course the deck was not finished in two weeks. It took more than four weeks to "complete". Complete is quoted because it wasn't really "complete". Steve noted that I had a basement window and he would do "something" to not deck over it. That "something" was just leave it open so i'll have a huge opening on my deck. Derek promised to install a grate over it so it wouldn't be a safety hazard and it will still allow light through. Of course when got they paid I'd never heard from them again... all phone calls and emails were ignored. Those are just the minor issues.
Next spring, during those heavy April and May showers I noticed that a large amount of water was seeping into my basement. The water was getting in from where the rim joist meets the foundation. The deck's ledger board was installed on the rim joist where the leaks were occurring. I suspected this might happen because during construction I told Steve that I wanted flashing or water proof membrane installed behind the ledger board. He said that is typically not done and he's installed hundreds of decks without them; even though all the deck details I've seen included them. I was stupid enough to believe him. Maybe it was another water proofing issue? "Luckily" I have a huge opening in my deck where my basement window is so I could stick my head in to see where the water might be coming from. To my horror there was no flashing or water proof membrane on top of the ledger board either!! The water was coming in from deck boards to behind the ledger board and down through the gap between the rim joist and the foundation.
I contacted Steve to have someone come take a look. Of course all phone calls went unanswered. He eventually emailed be back saying he was on holidays and ask for my address then was never heard from ever again.
Lessons learned:
They won't give you a complete job.
They will cut corners and cause irreparable damages to your property.
They will take your money and you'll never hear from them ever again.
Save yourself the headaches and NEVER HIRE STEVE from FENCE AND DECK CENTRE.

I HIRED THIS FIRM IN THE SPRING THIS YEAR TO REPLACE A DECK AND RESTORE A DECAYED BALCONY OVER IT. THEIR WORK WAS EXCELLENT AND TIMELY, I HEIR PRICE WAS 40% OF THE HIGH BID (IN FOUR). I SHOULD HIRE THEM AGAIN IF THE OCCASION OFFERS.

I hired The Fence and Deck Centre to install a new fence and gate on one side of my house. We just moved into our 4 year old house - turns out that just one side of the house had a fence installed by another company when it was just built. I first spoke to Steve (owner) who passed me onto Adam, "the bosses son" - it says so on his card, really. This is a family-owned company, in business for many years, and it shows. Adam visited the site, measured, put together a detailed quote and payment plan - very easy to do business with. They started work at first opportunity once weather permitted...and they cleaned up afterwards. They used superior materials and know-how...it was easy to compare their work to the existing fence on the other side of the house. At the same time, two adjacent neighbours who also were in need of new fence installs (none existed at the time) also contracted Adam to install their fences. So now, we all have fences on all sides. At the end of the project we had a really nice deck. However, two aspects of the project were not included as promised: 1. A new railing around the rear stairs adjacent to the deck with the bars to match to match those on the top level of the deck. 2. Chicken wire to be added to the storage area to prevent animals from gaining entry. We did not make an issue of this as quite frankly we were sick of the communication/coordination delays so we just wanted the entire project finished.
With the above said, credit to the original estimator Gemma who did her very best to keep us informed and the job moving ahead. It does not appear she received sufficient support from her head office as the communication/coordination problems appeared to frustrate her as well.

Comment from The Fence and Deck Centre:
Hi. I am Steve, the managing director. I was not aware of Mr. Corcoran's concerns until I saw this review. I do apologize for any concerns.
The railing for the back steps, was, as far as I know, not part of the original contract. It is quite possible that some changes to the configuration of the stepsmay have required additional railng, but I was not informed and thus the railing never got built.
With regards to the chicken wire, although it was in the contract, it was not on the build list , nor had Gemma told me or the crew about it, so I was unaware. For the $20 the wire would have cost I would have been happy to install it. Had Gemma let me know, or had Mr. Corcoran called me about it, I could have done all of this. This was only Gemma's second deck sale/installation, and perhaps she just didn't realize that she could talk to me and address these problems.
If Mr. Corcoran so wishes we'll be happy to go and rectify the concrens.
With regards to delays, I was not told anything about Mr. corcoran's concerns during the construction phase.. Initially, we went to start the job only to find that there was a gas line in the way right where the deck was to go. Gemma had not notified us, as, again, she was very new to the industry. In her defense, it is extremely rare to find a gas line at the back of a house, so she reasonably wouldn't have known. I have seen that perhaps twice in the last 10 years.
It took almost 2 weeks to have the gas lines marked, even though by law it's supposed to be 5 days; and then our installer, Lisa, was able to start. I can understand Mr. Corcoran being frustrated by this delay, as were we, but it was purely for safety reasons, as we didn't want to take a chance at blowing up his house.
The deck was actually a very complicated design, but my records show that it was finished quickly and efficiently.
