I have worked with SueLynn and Garden to Life Landscaping over a number of years and several properties. View property, I needed the company to create a number of conversation areas in a small bare backyard. For twenty years, in two homes, SueLynn Estby and her hard-working, and steadfast crew from Gardens for Life have brightened and transformed our back yard retreat and our front yard welcome and gathering areas. In our first home in the Almaden area of San Jose, we were backed by a shopping center-an unsettling sight that came with the sounds of truck engines roaring, dumpsters clanging, and car brakes squealing. In addition, the shopping center had blocked our view of the hills—a view that previously created for us a sense of peace and serenity. Moreover, my husband and I could not agree on a vision for our backyard: he wanted manicured English hedges and I desired wild flowers and natural grasses. Sitting with us at our kitchen table, SueLynn offered us non-judgemental listening. We even found we were laughing together as we described sandboxes, swings and our teenagers’ escapades in our backyard. Somehow, SueLynn heard our differing needs and created a soothing backyard retreat—with boxwoods, tumbling water, and tall, native grasses. Amazingly, SueLynn, also created a patio in which we could still glimpse the hills—truly a hidden treasure in our back yard. We loved it! Our family loved it! Our guests loved it! And last year when we sold out home in which we lived for 45 years, our realtor loved our yard—front and back. Because of SueLynn’s work through the years, we presented “curb appeal” that welcomed buyers for a look-see in a difficult market. Now the family who bought our home can create new memories! We moved one year ago to The Villages in San Jose. We were ready to start anew; however, the loss of our front and back yards created a sense of grief. Even as we were considering to put an offer on the home, we called SueLynn to ask her counsel about our new smaller space which is closer to neighbors. In addition, The Villages has landscaping regulations, which contribute to the beauty of the development and also can limit creativity. Good News—SueLynn had created gardens for gracious life in The Villages—including her own Mom’s space! With her practiced eye, Sue Lynn saw the positives and determined how to mask the negatives. She took great care to choose plants and trees that would grow quickly to block the views of our neighbors and still give visual beauty to our neighbors. She also created water features that provide the soothing sound of tumbling water and attract butterflies and birds—pure delight! And SueLynn stayed within our budget—for which we are most grateful. After talking to SueLynn about my dream garden for over a year I finally committed to making it happen. My garden is the private oasis I have always dreamed of but did not know where to start. She spent countless hours with me in person and over email helping me to get clear on what I wanted my garden to look like and how I wanted to feel when I spend time in it. She planned a garden that looks good now and will get better as it matures. My biggest surprise was how easy it is to care for as so many details where taken into consideration For years years I would look out at big weed filled yard and feel overwheelmed from beginning to end she and her team where professional and nice. My garden is a beautiful combination of flowers, organic vegetables and plants that create calm and privacy. I had no idea what was possible she not only stayed in my budget but finished up ahead of schedule. My only regret is that is took me so long to say yes.

I purchased a home in the Hayward hills and had Garden to Life redo the front yard as well as a side yard. I got more than I hoped for. A water feature softened my front entry making a gentile sound and pleasant feel. The view outside my windows on a hillside completely changed the experience of my kitchen! SueLynn was easy to work with, paid attention to what I wanted (and did not want), and has given me a lovely start to using all the land that came with my new home. I was pleased with the budget we established when we started the job and chose to add a bit more to the project as it progressed. Should I have need of her skills I know who to call.
