In 2012 I had the privilege to work with June and the rest of the amazing people at Wood Works by the Lake in Oelwein, Ia. As project manager for a 7,000 sq. ft. upscale lodge in Winthrop for an east coast couple's dream come true home. In sitting down and talking to June and doing a walkthrough of the lodge, June has an amazing envisioning mind. I knew without a doubt I wanted to work with her and her staff. I had found an amazing piece in her store that we ended up using as a bar in the lower level. It was made out of quarter sawn oak. There was one stipulation.....that they make a custom back bar to match it. And as you can see by the pictures they did a fantastic job!! They made a custom corner vanity for the master bath of knotty alder with a two-step dark stain process and equipped it with lights and a pull out shaving mirror. They made a head-board, two nightstands and a blanket chest that resembled old trunks. A beam made of knotty alder suspended by wood braces adorns the 12 foot ceiling. Everything was made to have the old world charm of a lodge past. A dining room table and buffet were custom made. A warm feel of special distressing and material aging makes this a great place to dine. In the powder room they made a vanity and mirror to look like an old dresser and mirror with candleholders to hold our copper vessel sink. One of our favorite areas has to be what is known as the cowboy bathroom. Woodworks touched almost every area in this room made from old barn wood and stained it a warm brown color. The linen cabinet and vanity have reclaimed tin from a hog barn for door panels. The buggy seat, shutters, mirror and towel bars make the room feel cozy. The hitching post makes a great place to hang towels while taking a soak in the claw foot tub. Double barn doors lead to a storage area. Also the beautiful constructed sliding doors that enter this area. the glass in the doors is salvaged material. The outside of the doors is knotty alder and the inside of the doors is the old barn wood. Before the project was completed we had purchased several piece for all around the lodge for some finishing touches and plan on stopping back to the shop at Wood Works by the Lake to continue picking up unique pieces. We had a lot of unique areas that required custom pieces, and with so much thought, effort and love put into every piece they came through on every level.
