About Us

Studio Black is an interior architecture and design studio based in Farnham, Surrey. Specialising in both residential and hospitality projects for private individuals & developers. Studio Black was formed in 2014 when our founder, Michael Jepp, brought back a positive and enthusiastic Los Angeles vibe. He honed his craft working alongside exciting, experienced and innovative designers on both hospitality and residential projects. Differentiated from other interior design companies, he is not only one of the youngest business owners within the UK design industry, but he has brought a fresh definition of interior aesthetics back from LA, creating spaces infused with a classic cool, contemporary style and liveability.

We recently approached Michael Jepp of Studio Black to redesign and upgrade the plans to the extension of our property. What a refreshing approach from young Michael, who has been prompt, precise and always punctual. His attention to detail despite all the budgetary constraints has resulted in plans for a contemporary, open plan ground floor that is both, bright and beautiful. All this was accomplished in a few short weeks, with plans drawn, rigorously reviewed and sent off to the Planning Application Department. So smooth and seamless!

Really liked Michael's ideas being a mixture of unexpected textiles, colours and objects giving a unique look while maintaining the practicality of having to live in the space. Michael managed the project from design, producing very detailed concept and final design drawings, through to identifying contractors and delivery of services/deliverables. There were some unfortunate issues with service providers that Michael sorted out efficiently and to our satisfaction. Michael delivers a quality product and we wish him well for the future.

Michael has been patient, helpful and committed throughout, providing fresh suggestions for theme and colour to help us crystallise our thinking followed by a range of accompanying furniture options to bring it all together. We would highly recommend him.

We are in the process of purchasing an office block for conversion into 5 flats but we were not happy with the internal layouts of the flats, they just didn't work and there was no "flow" so to say. We needed someone to do some Conceptual Space Planning and a friend recommended Boxy Studios, Michael visited our offices on a Thursday afternoon to discuss our wants and needs; kitchens were in the wrong place, bathrooms were not adjacent to service risers etc. Over the weekend Michael came up with completely new internal layouts and even managed to get us an additional bedroom in one of the flats. Going forward we will hopefully be using Boxy Studios to assist us with the Interior Design of the flats to turn a shabby 70's office block into quality flats with that special wow factor clients are looking for nowadays. I could not recommend Michael & Boxy Studios highly enough.

Mike has provided interior architectural drawings and suggestions for us, as well as supporting us sourcing quotes for various aspects of the project e.g bathrooms. As we are extending to split the property into two dwellings and require maximising all space it requires some space saving ideas too. Mike has been great to work with. We are very pleased to have hired him as has been responsive to questions and come up with some suggestions and designs that we never would have thought of to improve the project. He has also helped us to deal with building notifications with the council and has some good networking and business contacts to support his business.

We used Boxy Studios to help design our long, narrow kitchen housed in the basement with awkward access. Michael came up with space saving solutions we hadnt thought about before, allowing us to have the sleek modern kitchen we desired with everything hidden away. Mike was very professional, easy to deal with and listened to all our requirements and incorporated these into the final design which we are extremely pleased with. We would not hesitate in using Boxy Studios again for any future projects and are more than happy to recommend Michael and his team.

Mike helped us with a major house downsizing move in which we had to substantially reduce our furniture from a very large period house into a modern, light and airy new-build. He helped us by producing alternative space plans and furniture layouts that enabled us to envision how we could best use the house and also helped us to select and position the furniture that would be most suitable for different spaces and design combinations that would be harmonious from a design/aesthetic point of view. He is extremely swift and efficient in turning round ideas and designs and very open to dialogue that helps you to 'own' the solution and make it personal rather than just a proposal We would recommend him without hesitation and plan to use him again as we take stock of living in the house for a while and start to evolve the furnishings/replace some of the furniture
