Ceilings should always be painted in a lighter shade (eg, half the toner if painting white) of the same colour, if you're going to use the same colour, to avoid the closed-in/falling inwards effect of using the same colour paint for the entire room. In addition, to mask flaws, use a flat paint, a good quality washable, and paint cornices in the same shade as the ceiling to give the room a larger feel. If you have cornices with a 90 degree ceiling/wall transition, paint the wall section in the same shade as the wall, to maximise height. There is nothing wrong with painting skirting boards in a flat paint, same as the walls, as it elongates the walls Similarly with doors and windows, a flat paint adds to the overall effect - plus it's easier to apply and clean up. You may just have to apply a couple of more coats. The principles are the same as with clothing; separate differently coloured items of clothing can shorten your apparent height, while one overall colour will tend to lengthen your stature. Just painted our large base boards in flat like the walls; can tell the in-law wasn't sure about this but it totally elongates! I'll pass this on!
