Butt Hinge
Stronger than it looks, this door feature loves to bear the weight
A butt hinge connects a door and a jamb at the surfaces that abut. The plates of a butt hinge attach to the wood with screws and carry the weight of the swinging door by pivoting on a pin.
Attaching the door to the jamb so that it can swing, a butt hinge has to be very strong to carry the weight.
This is the pin that the butt hinge pivots on.
Doors typically use two or three sets of hinges depending on the height and weight of the door.
Most hinges are recessed into the wood by means of a chisel. Hanging doors properly is a craft in itself.
