Design on the Diagonal
Playing it straight isn't always the best option when designing a room
Whether it’s slanting the dining room table, an island or your entire living room layout, designing on a diagonal may improve your overall look and could even increase traffic flow. Start small by playing with the items you can easily change back, such as a rug. Open your eyes to a few of these ideas. Maybe a design on the diagonal is just the fresh new look your home needs for the new year!
If it’s tough to maneuver all the way around your dining room table when it’s placed lengthwise, consider placing it on the diagonal instead. It's awkward to have to squeeze behind the person at the head of the table (for you or the person enjoying his meal), and this layout may solve that.
When the kitchen and living room is all a part of one open space, consider turning the entire living room layout on the diagonal. It will create the distinction of two separate spaces in an unexpected yet contemporary fashion.
In this example, a couch set on the diagonal opens up this living area and increases traffic flow in and out of the space. Two single chairs arranged across from it help the look feel balanced.
By arranging this entire living room on a diagonal, the designer created two separate seating areas. This maximized the functionality of the space and made it ideal for entertaining.
An easy experiment: Test out your rug on the diagonal. You can easily put it back if you don’t like it, but it’s possible it will add an interesting twist to your layout.

Maximum traffic flow is essential for a kitchen, regardless of whether you’re cooking for two or entertaining for 12. If you’re thinking about adding an island to your kitchen, pay close attention to its placement. It may be that an island on the diagonal will open the space and increase overall functionality.
An island parallel to the countertops would have worked just fine in this kitchen, but when placed on a diagonal, it feels centered and creates an equilibrium across the room.
