Under the Avocado tree I planted tough plants that can take the shade and the competition for water and nutrients. The plants you see in the picture are Agave attenuata, and ferns. I also planted variegated Lirope ( which you can'tt see here) that will add brightness, spread and colonize a nice large swath on the sloped side of the tree.

Nearly 1/4 of the property was converted to growing fruit trees and vegetables to serve a family of four. Several raised vegetable garden beds, two trellised grape vines, a fig tree, a Fuji apple tree, a Honeycrisp apple tree, and two different Avocado trees will provide fresh, organic fruit for the family in the coming years. A custom built fence was built around the entire food production area to keep the family's canine out of mischievous activities.

Located on an extraordinary hillside site above the San Fernando Valley, the Sherman Residence was designed to unite indoors and outdoors. The house is made up of as a series of board-formed concrete, wood and glass pavilions connected via intersticial gallery spaces that together define a central courtyard. From each room one can see the rich and varied landscape, which includes indigenous large oaks, sycamores, “working” plants such as orange and avocado trees, palms and succulents. A singular low-slung wood roof with deep overhangs shades and unifies the overall composition.

The front areas of this landscape were transformed from a tired, water thirsty lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance and a new driveway using large concrete slabs with small black pebbles set in resin. A Japanese Maple surrounded by mondo grass and pebbles soften the hardscaping. Elfin thyme was planted between the pavers to the entrance. Plants for sun and part shade complete this project, just completed in February 2014. The back areas of this transformation are in a separate project: Modern Water-Side Landscape Remodel.
