Birch hardwood flooring shares the qualities of other North American wood such as oak and maple but has special characteristics that make it an excellent choice for flooring in the home. Birch has a Janka rating close to that of red oak - allowing for a great alternative to the standard, and the color variation from light to dark with natural highlights is likely to appeal to many decorators and home owners.

A custom bed and bench are the focal points of the cool and calm bedroom. The silver tree side table is by Phillips Collection, and the crystal block lamps are from Visual Comfort (both available at White Birch Studio).

Open-plan living room of a new construction home in the Berkeley Hills, CA. Double-height floor-to-ceiling steel-framed picture windows frame an unobstructed mature forest canopy, dissolving the boundary between interior and landscape. Birch plywood ceiling panel with a sculptural black steel hexagonal pendant light fixture anchors the double-height volume. Walnut hardwood floors, a custom geometric laser-cut wood privacy panel echoing the exterior lattice screen, and a glass stair railing with black steel balustrade complete the material palette. Reconfiguration of the exising kitchen/living room area yielded a more gracious entertaining space with unobstructed views and natural lighting. The pre-finished flooring is a 5" width plank from Dansk Hardwood: Vintage Birch Hard-scraped Solid in the "Toast" finish with satin sheen. Last I checked, it was discontinued by the manufacturer.

Rear garden terraces are framed by forest and lower rain gardens, filled with native birch, willow, fern and iris. Roof drains on the residence and french drains in the lawn terrace fill the space defined by low stone walls. Cypress logs were harvested from nearby river bottoms and milled to create the bridge that connects the terraces.
