Inspiration for a timeless deck container garden remodel in San Francisco with decking

APLD 2021 Silver Award Winning Landscape Design. Galvanized troughs used for vegetables in the side yard. An expansive back yard landscape with several mature oak trees and a stunning Golden Locust tree has been transformed into a welcoming outdoor retreat. The renovations include a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees occupy some of the sunniest areas of the landscape. A variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants for both sunny and shady areas include several succulents, grasses, CA natives and other site-appropriate Mediterranean plants complimented by a variety of boulders. Green roof in full sun is harder than in the shade. Sterilized shale is used here over slightly sloped rubber membrane with sedum plants plugged into shale and then watered with drip irrigation for first two summers depending on rain amount. Garden fence holds back deer, rabbits and ground hogs. Roof scuppers provide water to the butterfly garden. Raised beds mean less bending over and better weed control. tkd

Vego Garden is a Houston-based company with the goal to redefine metal raised garden beds. The company was founded under the concept to launch a modular garden bed systems with 20+ years design life, utilizing eco-friendly materials instead of cutting down trees.

We installed a raised garden bed made of redwood with individual timed sprinklers. This is a great contemporary garden with minimal upkeep.

We needed a bridge to cross the dry creek bed, so I designed a version of a Japanese yatsuhashi, or zig zag, bridge. It is clad in concrete backer board. I wanted to simulate a granite mountain plateau with a boulder peak. The client purchased the concrete lantern which perfectly complements the entrance to this woodland garden. Photo by Jay Sifford

This once empty yard was transformed with perennial gardens, raised garden beds, a cute chicken coop, and boxwood hedge with a garden gate. The raised beds are home to strawberries, vegetables, herbs, lavender and annuals.

Newly built vegetable garden. Beds are 4 inch cedar, pathways are river stone, contained on the perimeter by steel edging. Critterfence deters rabbits without obscuring the architecture of the garden. In the rear, support posts contain raspberries.
